Cold shock trick.
    #4014540 - 04/04/05 08:57 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Many of you obviously know optimal conditions from your posts.

Here is a lesser known trick I have been posting for years.

Multiple trays with the same isolate or consistent strain can be placed in the fridge as they reach the point where they would normally be initiated. When the desired number of trays to comfortably fit the fruiting chamber build up, take them out of the fridge and fruit them all. They will all begin pinning at the same time!

I'm pretty sure most people do this anyway, even if they don't realize the lesser known benefits. there is alot less hassle anyway.

Not that everyone has this convenience, but I use one large non-working upright heated freezer as an incubator & another that functions as a fruiting chamber.

When I transfer trays from the incubator to the fruiting chamber, I turn the cooling on, allow it to cool down to around 40 / 45F, then turn it off. Being so well insulated, it will maintain a very cool temperature range for 36 / 48 hours.

Then, I turn on the piped in cool-mist & 12/12 light timer. Again, being so well insulated - the light provides just enough heat to run the ambient internal temperature up to 76F during the light cycle & it recedes down to around 70F during the dark cycle.

That's a bit warm for azurescens isn't it? Or are these setups for edibles that benefit from a cold shock?

Thank you Sir.

It took a bit of tinkering to get it RIGHT. But, well worth the doing. As the result is almost a "set it & forget it" system that needs very little attention.

neat setup [Re: agar]
    #4016818 - 04/05/05 11:13 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

yeah, really neat. I was thinking to do something like that if I ever decided to start growing again. seeing someone else using it, is kinda inspirational.

can i ask your average yield in a month?

I hear he sometimes can pull off a whole ounce a month out of that..but I would expect less, you know, just in case.

I see that you are from "somewhere else", should I assume that is not in the US?  I would be incredibly paranoid with an awesome setup lke that.  Dude does mainly non-cubensis species.  For the challenge and for something different.  1 or 2 small sterlites is the most.  If he lived "somewhere else", I'm sure dude would start innovating.

Very cool though...
