I would say ideally that someone should be at least into their early twenties before they begin to experiment with psychedelics. Of course nobody will listen to this when they are 16 years old and they just want to trip. There are still many changes taking place in the brain during the teenage years and it is probably best to not interfere with it by taking psychedelics. I'm not insinuating that psychedelics cause brain damage, but they definitely change your personality and at that age it hasn't even fully developed yet.

For what kind of age limit are you looking?
I was 18 the first time I tried LSD. Before that I had a low dose of shrooms at around 16. I think it completely depends on the person and their level of emotional and mental maturity. Some of my friends had used LSD/shrooms at 15 or 16 and very much so enjoyed and benefited from their trip. Other people I know I still don't think should try either substance.
How can any law or rule apply to every person with the vast diversity present in this world.

Age is not always a good deciding factor. Here's an article that may help: http://www.maps.org/news-letters/v14n2-html/ Select: Parenting in a War Zone: A Conversation with the Grey Family Interviewed by Jon Hanna

Is he cute?
j/k
As much as I hate labels and arbitrary age limits you have to know them. How old are you? I don't think there is anything wrong with pointing a 15 year old in the direction of proper knowledge and allowing him to explore the world himself. However if you provide him with shrooms you're opening yourself to a whole world of hell. It's unfortunate in the current system but you do need to take into account the legal ramifications of your actions.
(Replace he/himself with she/herself at will.)

Exactly. As long as you aren't making choices for him or influencing him in a certain way then what harm are you doing? If he decides on his own to partake in sacred mushrooms then my advice to you would be to help him in his journey.

I was 16 when I did shrooms and LSD my first time, just depends on if you think they can handle it. I turn people on to it if I think they deserve it and should experiance it and can handle it, just use your best judgement.

Prior to 18, by-and-large, certain basic developmental processes have not 'jelled,' and one runs the risk of undoing some personality formation. I saw a number of 'acid casualties' growing up. If one has arrived at an age where a certain autonomy is present - say, away at college, without the negative reactions from parents; acts of deception and sneakiness on the part of the experimenter can be eliminated (with attendant guilt), freedom of time constraints, and trustworthy, experienced guides are available, then much more positive conditions are in place. Potentially negative experiences are thus minimized. There should be no taking of psychedelics without preparation. This is not stuffy, this is how it is done properly. Do not forget set and setting. Reckless use by immature individuals has negative consequences, well-planned excursions has life-long benefits.

Prior to 18
It's great you can come up with a magic age that fits most of the world's population.

there are those in the SF music scene who assert that guitarist bobby weir (of the good old grateful dead) did waaay too much excellent owsley acid while still in his teens, and his personality development was ummmmm impaired, if'n ya know whattamean...
dr albert hofmann states that psychedelics are best employed by persons of middle age & older...
our friend markos was giving you the benefit of his years in the mental health care profession, and observations gathered from working with clients/patients/students who could be labeled "youth"...
even tim leary & dick alpert & ralph metzner remarked about psychedelic drugs "mainly they confuse"...
phsyiological changes are occuring quite rapidly in the "developing brain" & tend to slow down a bit by the mid-20s or so... but life-experiences continue to accrue in most individuals: moving away from parents, sexual experiences, marriage, parenthood, finishing education tracks & beginning career paths, raising offspring to young adulthood... and poof, suddenly you're 40-something or older... read some aldous huxley, some albert hofmann, some alan watts, some huston smith, etc for some perspectives on age & tripping... maybe even check out www.csp.org or www.psychedelic-library.org for some excerpts - it couldn't hurt, mmm?

That's fine but to give a specific age is ridiculous. Perhaps an age range would have been more appropriate.

I don't think legal age of majority has anything to do with this thread. A person can't drink until they are 21 should a person not use mushrooms until 21? Not only that, also mushrooms are illegal in most of the world so legal age of majority has absolutely nothing to do with how old a person should be when they use them.

I was 15-16 when I was using mushrooms the heaviest. With two older bros and divorced parents, I grew up fast but I was also extremely mature for my age. I didn't just use shrooms to get fucked up, they were intensely spiritual for me and helped me dig deeper into who/what I actually am. So I think if your friend is stable upstairs, content with himself and his life, all should go well.

Most everyone is talking physical ages, which is ridiculous, IMO... there is no physical age where suddenly your chemistry switches to the "it's-ok-to-do-psychedelics-now" mode... This kid has to go find the info, dwell on it, then decide for himself. The surefire way to make a kid try something when they're not ready is to simply tell him "no" with no reason why, or some obvious bs reason.

by-and-large
he means "around the age of eighteen" which could mean a range of weeks to years... it's an ambiguous statement
