Should we initiate pinning?
    #4013446 - 04/04/05 06:54 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey. my friend cased two rapidly colonizing pints of WBS yesterday, with a casing layer of about 1/2"...It's been about 36 hours, and it has already begun to grow in the valleys of the surface. It's currently incubating at 83 degrees, with 95 percent humidity. Should he initiate pinning now, or wait at least until tomorrow? There are at least 8 visible tufts of mycelium peaking in various areas of the 14x8 pan. Thanks.

I usually birth about then...My chambers a bit warm though and air exchanges could be better...especially if using coir though...th emyc keeps keating through the coir after you birth it, more than peat.

Just remember, when you start fruiting, try to drop your temp. to about 75-78 F. Don't want it to colonize to much. Also, might want to do a very light patch on the little myc. poping up so you can let the rest catch up some.

First thing you want to understand is that the myc will still grow in a vegetative mode for several days before slowing up through the transition to generative growth, this is where the experienced grower knows when to initiate. If you have 8 spots breaking through then I would take a clean fork and lift up some other areas and check to see if the myc is just below the surface, if it is then lightly sprinkle (patch) those areas where the myc has broken through and initiate immediately. You will find that over the next several days the myc will be popping out everywhere and by the time the myc is in full generative mode your casing will be well colonized. Now if the myc isn't just under the surface in these other areas then you will want to still patch those areas to prevent premature pinning and let the rest of the mycelium catch up. Here read this:
