help with my comp.
    #4007959 - 04/03/05 08:10 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

btw, I know very little about computers.

Every once in a while I notice a bunch of wierd search items in the history. I find things like "Hotels in Alaska" and "cervical cancer", things that don't apply to myself or the 1 other member of this household. I don't find weird pages visited, it's what I see in the autoform box when google something, weird searches. I've purchased spyware trackers and erasers and "No Trace" but the problem still pops up every so often.

There is always one of us here, I work nights and my boyfriend goes to school days. I know it isn't someone sitting at our computer, nobody goes into the bedroom.

Can anyone help me out?

spyware does not enter words into your search history - not spyware or any sort of malicious software. most likely the other person you live with is using the computer without your knowledge and lying when confronted. hate to break it to you: your roomate is full of shit.

The problem is that you are infected with some kind of virus..

This virus is making searches on search engines making them money, the words you described are both pretty good paying searches..

The industry is called paid 2 search, and words like "cancer, penis pills", etc all are big money makers..

look thru your processes and upgrade your Windows thru Windows update..

(google search: Windows Update Scan)

hope I helped..

Thank you OJ.

For the rest of you, You shouldn't answer questions if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. I have a strong relationship and suspicions would never arise.

no need to get nasty, chill :stoned:

oh and don't pay for 'spyware trackers' ever again. adaware and spybot are excellent and free. also get avg if you don't have a working antivirus to prevent these problems in the future. if it was a virus careful what you download, and don't d/l attachments from wierd e-mails. if it's questionable scan it first, and tell your partner to do the same. you most likely will never have a virus or spyware again if you follow those reccomendations and use a decent browser (mozilla, firefox, opera)

MeatSpace and others:

Firefox is a good alternative to internet explorer becuase it is not by microsoft, when hackers attack the internet they are aiming for the masses (anything by microsoft). Firefox is a relativelly safe alternative to preventing yourself from getting lots of common internet explorer exploits.

As for removing virus', Run an anti-virus and get the name of the virus (for example. Malyssa221.exe) If the antivirus can remove it great, if not you need search on google for virus definitions which you can remove from your computer

Antivirus * Looks for a virus on your computer, this can be hidden inside of other files, inside filestreams, etc. Once it is found, the AntiVirus (A/V) attempts to remove the virus.

Firewall * A program ran on your computer that monitors EVERYTHING that happens, and alerts you of suspicious activity *

As for the most reliable of the two:

AntiVirus: 1. Norton Antivirus
2. Kaspersky - Believe it's free

FireWall:
1. Symantec
2. Zone Alarm - Not reccommended

AdAware and Spyware Removal:
1. AdAware
2. Spybot - Never Used it
