Dead religious figures

Why is it whenever someone like Mother Teresa, the Pope, or Mahatma Gandhi passes away, thousands, sometimes millions gather around their exposed, and nicely kempt cadaver to mourn them? I mean, you cant really picture this with a dead President. Can you imagine if the body of Ronald Reagan was exposed before the world. Anyone would like to share their ideas on what, if anything, are the social and spiritual implications of this?

If you're considered a holy person, then your body becomes a relic, and is therefore considered holy in its own right.

huh?
have you never been to a funeral? think of all the possible reasons you went, and you'll have your answer.
Reagan was laid in state for several days...and thousands of ordinary people flocked to see his casket. So what?

What sort of bothers me about this whole "worshipping the dead leaders" thing is the implications of doing so. Everyone remembers Ghandi for his amazing social work and beautiful philosophies, everyone looks up to Mother Theresa for her social work, we have a day set aside to commemorate Martin Luther King, hell we have an entire religion based upon one of the biggest social activists ever - Jesus; but few follow in their footsteps.
Most people just worship these figures, but never do as they do. Historically, Jesus was not a God until a century after his death - does this possibly point to religions based around Ghandi or Martin Luther King as well? While worshipping these people may bot be all bad, their real message was social action and change.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Sorry for the rant

We should revere dead leaders because of what they represent...not because of who they were. When one becomes Pope or President one becomes a symbol which transcends their person as a human.

Yes, follow the leader like sheep to the slaughter.
The dead are dead, and hence boring.

Not all dead people are boring... what about Johnny Carson?

So, lets see...you promote a world without leaders. Anarchy would not be fun. That makes no sense at all, it is a typical no thought-knee jerk, anti authority-because it is cool response.

They morn for the positive things they put in action in this world.... It is also to be noted that a lot of famous musicians and singers get this same respected morning from the people who appreciated them, or have somehow produced a means to understanding something in their lives thru the touching and healing emotions of musical/lyrical expression....

Anarchy would be fun if we ALL could manage to respect the same universal values. Although i find it impossible today, i do promote it for tomorrow. Probably it will never happen, but can you point me out something better than total freedom with total respect as a vision for the future ?
Leaders do what they should do, they lead, like a doctor trying to cure people, or an engineer trying to build a structure. The difference is that a leader congregates and command people, sometimes millions of people. This leader figure affects them like a "father" affecting a son named "consciousness", but as an analogy to my freedom depicted future, his son must grow up and has to start thinking and living on his own. Will that ever happen to mankind in the future ? I don't know, but if you believe different patterns of existence can occur, then it might happen.
