Oat seed
    #4010430 - 04/03/05 09:26 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I have read many teks on wild bird seed and i have allot of Oat seeds about 50lbs to be exact. My question is would oat seed work in the same way as wbs and i was also wondering how mixing the brown rice flour mix and wbs or oat seed would preform for substrate because i plan on using about half of this mix for bulk substrate STRAW/H poo
i have these bags from a certain webs site don't know if i can mention that on here but these bag have filter patches and are autovacs i plan on using 1/2 pint jars to spawn the bulk substrate just wondering if anyone has tried something like this before and if so what was there results

Try the oat, and prepare it like rye (24 hour soak, then simmer).

Experimenting is what it's all about, I say go for it as well.

dont simmer oats, they are like sponges, an 8-12hr soak is more than sufficient,
add a little gypusm to the water and a little more to the grain before you load your jars, other than that, I have had splendid results using oat groats

cool thanx for your advice i am using TC for this i have a cake that has been producing flushes since 12/12/04 and it is about exhausted i believe not had many pins lately except one or to so about 3 weeks ago i cased with 100%vermiculite and massively water and i have only seen 2 nice sized mushies i was planning on making a outdoor bed but did not know if this would be very effective since the cake is so old what is your opinion can u believe that i have gotten approx 7 flushes with dry weight of each flush at about 9 grams this was one of those bags for gourmet mushies inoculated on 10/10/04 took awhile for 1st flush almost 2 months but when it came it was awesome

There is a pretty big difference between seed and groats (since seed still has an intact hull). I find that my oat seed (sold as some kind of pet food) is even harder than rye or wheat and needs a good deal more soaking and simmering and even then it ends up really dry. I have yet to get anything to fruit off of it, but that is of course my fault -- if you figure it out, it should work as well as other grains.
