WBS Moisture Content?
    #4010410 - 04/03/05 09:23 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I just did 4 qt. WBS jars using the 6T WBS Tek on this site: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23619. My jars started to colonize on the 5th day, but now on the 11-12 day they seem to have stalled at about 5%. They are incubating at 70-75 which i know is low, but everyone said it would be fine just take about 3-4 weeks to fully colonize. Well at the rate they're going it will never be fully colonized. Some said my moisture content could be too low, but i followed the tek exactly. I soaked 18 hours then drained 40 min. loaded jars 3/4 full and PC'd for 80min. I dont know what i did wrong?

Low temps are killing you. Anything dries out over time, and it sounds like your jars are in the process of it, or already have.

Build an incubator my friend, 70 isn't going to hack it.

I talked to various ppl on this site that said they incubate at those temps and have fine results.

Well, it doesn't seem to be working out for you.

Seriously, try incubating.  What do you have to lose?  Just incubate at 80-84 degrees fahrenheit, and see if that fixes your stalled growth.

I just dont really have the space for an incubator. Im kind of doing this stealth mode, and an incubator would look really obvious. I guess i may break down, and give it a try.

There's got to be a way for you to do it discreetly. 4 quarts would fit into a relatively small box. Maybe you could try a heat bomb?

is all i need for a small TIT, 2 equal sized tubs, and a submersable fish tank heater? how cheap can this be done for? And are all heaters adjustable, even the ones from wal mart?

It's a submersible aquarium heater inside of a glass bottle placed inside your chamber.

so a heat bomb is just a glass jar filled w/ water w/ a submersable heater in it set to 83 or so degrees? Just put that into my chamber and it will warm the whole thing to 83?

How big of a heater do i need for this? Like would a heater for 5-10 gallons work?

You don't need a big heater at all. Do a search on how to build a heat bomb.

Here's a link for a TiT setup tek. Modify it to fit your needs.

In another life, I authored that tek. agar=SixTango=Mycota on various sites

Assuming you used multi/spore inoculate"

Incubation temp is appears to be what your trouble is.

Multi/spore can be slow in starting. Constant temps around 80/82 are in the optimal range. See if you can make that happen.

Yes, agar i think im going to build a heat bomb, and put it in my incubation chamber. Do you think i may have already fucked them up by letting them dry out too much. Or will the increased temp. get them going again?

I pc'd them and waited about 5 days then inoced them, so it's only been like 2 weeks since pc'ing. I dont think that they should have dried out that much.

I inoculate within 50 hours of PC'ing. Sooner is better IMHO.

What size hole is in the lid & did you use tyvek? !/4 inch hole & tyvek will not lose a lot of moisture - fast.

If not to dried out, they should still colonize, if you can raise temp to 80F. If you make an incubator, place an open jar of water in it - also. To help the rH, so they don't dry out - anymore.

I used 3/8 holes with polyfill.

Polyfil allows more air/gas/moisture exchange than tyvek. Sadly, yours may be to dry, now. Only time & better incubation temp will tell.

im guessing there's no way to get more moisture to it now?

Maybe injecting some sterilized water into the jars?

Sadly, injecting water most often will cause bacterial bloom.

If you wanna be stealth, just use your PC for an incubator then overclock it until it gets warm enough at idle inside the case, usually doesn't take much. That would atleast tell you if your temp is the issue without having to buy anything.

for the hot water bath, just get a fish tank heater, stick it inside a small container, like a cooler, and bring the water inside the container over the heater but under the lids. if you get a heater with a therm built in, then you can keep a constant and perfect 86F.

But for your existing jars, you cannot rehydrate a jar, the only thing you can do at this point is birth the cake and *steriley* brush the dried uncolonized cake off with your hands till all you have is colonized cake. This will help keep any contaimination from occuring after you birth the cake.

What about boiling/pc'ing the water and using that to inject in as sterile an environment as possible.

i wouldn't reccomend having your jars in standing water.
runs too many risks imo. :shake:

yeah, standing water can stunt growth as easily as it being dried out. on top of that, you would have to inject the cake itself with water and that wouldnt even rehydrate it that well, it would just make certain sections wetter than others.

once your cakes are innoc'd, their basically on thier own from there.
