What type of lighting for examining jars?

I was wondering what type of lighting you guys use to prevent pinning when you examine your jars. I read that red light has no effect on pin formation so I went to Kmart today and picked up a red colored light bulb.
Checked my jars by the way. 16/16 all looking good with no contams and good colonization after 7 days in incubation. I also noticed that it is definitely true that GT's are slower to colonize, most of my EQ's are about 75% and the GT's are maybe 50% or less.

Congrats on your jars. Don't sweat the light inducing pinning when you check your jars, just be quick about it and don't blast them with direct light for long.

hi ninja master here from the general questions chan to answer your questions. in the paul stamets book the mushroom cultivator it says that cubensis is a photo-tropic mushroom meaning that it responded to light to initiate pinning. the light that it pins with is BLUE light. its in your regular every day light everywhere. to stop pinning you would want to use RED light to view your spawn production. you can use this idea to also help with your pinning strategy. view under red light until you know 100% sure that it was supposed to pin 2 days ago. then give it a good amount of blue light and the pinning will be heavier than just blue light all along. have fun with this and get a red party light!
