Possible Panealous?
    #4010248 - 04/03/05 10:49 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Im curious, yesterday I found some mushrooms growing on cow dung in southeast tennessee that looked exactly like cubes. As soon as I say these mushies, I immmediately assumed they were cubes, just because of there habitat. However, several hours after picking, the muchrooms still did not show any signs of bluing, or bruising of any sort.

I didnt take a sporeprint, or any pictures, because I tossed the shrooms, but Im curious if any cube panealous look alikes grow on cow manure.

at a glance they could look simular but if you know anything about cubensis they difference are easily noticed.

Here is a pic of a cubensis. Notice the veil with the purple spore deposit on it.

Here is a pic of Panaeolus castaneifolius, notice the black spore deposit in the gills and longer thiner stems.

hope this helps

Do a search on the different species learn it love it live it, habitat for one mushroom is habitat for many and sometimes very deadly ones.

if the mushroom looks anything like that second pic there, yet still gives brown spores, then i wouldnt reccommend eating it.

the short and fat ones gives chocolately spores
the tall and skinny ones give black spores
