Compost
    #4010034 - 04/03/05 10:17 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I've made millions of these posts/threads haha...

Anyways, I've been working on my own, read through a bunch of stuff...

For compost they recommend a 2:1 ratio...Well, 50/50...
For mushrooms I thought that the ratio was 4:1..right?

Anyways, I utilized a recycling bin and drilled some holes in it...For better aeration and drainage.....
Its good this way because
-Looks cleaner
-Can transport it
-Can control several aspects
But it's not so great because all the bugs that help out w/ decomposition can't get in...so it kind of sucks....

I've got some poo sitting outside(was sitting outside)...It had lots of buggies in it...I threw it in there...In the hopes that they'd stay, eat the poo, and help eat other stuff in there

Anyways, I don't want to Burn my mycelium when my compost is finished...Was it nitrogen that burns it or carbon?...The ratios 4:1...but which is one part and which is 4 parts?

I broke up the straw into like 2in or so pieces and mixed in so veg. and fruit left overs and some poo so far...Is poo a nitrogen sourse or a carbon source...?

Ill have some pics up later on and i'll post em and Agar can tell me what he thinks lol....And maybe someone will be inspired and want to get it a go....I'ma mess this up a lot, even after reading a bunch, but it's pretty fun so far

Thankx

poo = N source. Straw = Carbon lignin/cellulose source

what size bin are you using?

Phase 2 composting, you have to have enough MASS that the pile heats up.

Other peeps will shout wrong. But, I could never get compost pile to function properly unless I had a pile containing at least 3 square yards of material .

I had FAR better luck, when using lots (as in tons) of material.

Hope you have better luck with a mini-composter.

Oh yea, it has to work up heat, Fuck, i forgot about that...

It's a recycling bin, so not big at all..Probably 5x3x4 (in feet)...

But I could just make something in the back and pile it up there, but I couldn't really get "tons" of material ...lol
Compost looks pretty awesome as it rots, ya get to see nature in action, i sound like such a g33k lol

What about using a 4:1 ratio w/ just straw and h/poo, and some scrapes of fruit/grass clippings ect ect?...

Or would that make it pointless? lol

quasi/compost is still GOOD STUFF. Any composting helps.

4/1 ratio straw/poo is fine. Add all your coffee grounds

Fruit & Veggie refuse helps. If there are any beer micro/brewing places around, spent grain is also great.

Another thing that is good & composts QUICK, is hot air POPPED POP/CORN.

Good way to make a pile on the ground is drive a few metal fence post stakes in ground, then fence it in with wire fencing.

That way you can create a taller stack (for heat). Plus is easy to open & turn with pitch/fork.

Hell if I know, but - Coffee grounds are just fungi-friendly . Myc loves them. I save up & add grounds to h/poo sub.

If you know anyone that works in a fast food place, cafe, resturant, or coffee shop. Ask them to save C/grounds up for you. I wish I had a ton of them.

I read that they did somewhere

lol, but i'll use them, I'll ask my pops to save me some, he makes coffee every morning, everyday, so i'll have enough for my small op..

What about eggshells? They would change the ph to more base right? So could I possiably mess it up by using too much?....And if crushed they'd change it quickly, would that mess up the compost?...Like...does the compost require a certain Ph to...compost?..

Mature compost should have a ph between 7 & 8.

Yea Agar i know that....lol

But how can i test the Ph levels

If I knew how to do that i'd be using peat and adding other things without worrying...plus i dont really know one buffer from the other....some are long-term and short-term...

Short terms good for changing something quickly (like lime to peat) and long-terms good for keeping the ph up for future flushes, (like broken *not Powered* eggshells in regular casings....)

Can't believe u found this and posted back to it lol

Tnkx

you ever seen those composter thingys  its like  barrel with an  openin anda latch

you basically  put your compost int the  mofo,,,latch the openin and give her a spin every so often  suppose to kill  seeds durin the process  but i think that's  true with all compost  caz the core temps can get up there.. decomposition rules
