Fungus, indeed. A better word would be MOLD:
Quorn is "the processed cellular mass that is obtained from the filamentous fungus Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684," according to the manufacturer's application to the FDA. The fungus by-product was approved in the U.K. in 1985 and is the top-selling meat substitute in Europe.
I guess it's not so bad since it could help reduce our dependence on animal-based products... But it would be much cooler if they could use mycoprotein extracted from perfect fungi (rather than imperfect molds)... There are so many medicinally benefical species to choose from. Can you imagine "ground beef" made from maitake, shitake, and lion's mane mycelium? Imagine all the fabulous healthful glycoproteins that would be in the mix!

Yo Sheik: See if your Aunt can get them to ditch the mold and start using some real mycelium.
It probably wouldn't be profitable enough for them, since nothing grows faster than mold. Eh well.

seriously whats all this hassle about it being a mold.
ok actually when i first read the thread i was like "ewwww gross" myself but then i remembered the various molds already used in foods such as cheese or even the one fungus thata turns soy beans into some kind of meat consistancy 'brick' in india, i cannot recall the name right now.
anyway, im curious if the product will sell, are there enuf hippies out there nowadays to buy it? as i am sure it wont be cheap and hippies usually dont have that much of the cash on them peace ohm

It's not a hassle... Some of my best food friends are molds (bleu cheese comes to mind). I just think there could be more beneficial mycelia to use than a run-o-the-mill mold if one wanted to make mycoprotein.

It is a bit pricier than meat, but not that much more expensive really. The taste is quite good and it comes in a variety of "meat substitutes", such as fillets, nuggets, minced meat, burgers, etc. There is no way one could tell it comes from a mold, but it is a bit different than meat, especially in texture. Some of the forms are a bit bland and needs some spicing to taste ok too. I am not a vegetarian myself, but quorn is pretty popular among the ones I know, although it contains egg.

read my post again, i mention the good mold in cheese and i sure love them! and btw speeker says it, its tempeh i was thinking about that turns soy beans into this uh .. thing you can eat
anyway, i like the idea but somehow i still cannot imagine this to be quite a seller on the EU / US market since people imho wouldnt be too attrackted over the idea of munching some mold heh peace ohm

The europeans love the stuff, asians eat molds all the time, temphey, miso such n such. She is just the acountant so i doubt she would be able to sway a company that has been making the stuf for 15 years. I bet it is better then tofu.

um... is this new in USA then? huh - it's been here for over 5 years, tastes like the usual bland veggie meatsubstitutes (i.e. tofu) but more expensive.
