Whatever it is, I would initiate pinning NOW before it gets any worse.

No, how long ago was it fruited...hopefully 3-7 days ago and it will be pinning any day. If 3-4 days or less...I'd patch it up because you'll be on your way to some heavy myc covering.

That's what your casing should look like during primordia formation, and not a day earlier. If you just introduced that to fruiting, yes, it's likely you'll run into overlay with that.

How far along is it?

i have initiated pinning a week ago, giving it 4-5 fannings a day, but the mycelium keeps on growing like crazy...

Don't know what else to do, they are cambos..

It looks like you are in good shape to me! When people talk about overlay they are talking about when the myc forms a layer of growth that basically seals the substrate and prevent any moisture from entering via misting etc.
What you have ,on the other hand, looks like a very healthy casing that will likely perform very well for you!!

Good Luck!..and keep us posted!

It most likly will be pinning any day now...you could throw a LITTLE myc to partially cover the really heavy spots...just spot the myc with bits of casing mix..dont patch to much though or you could patch over comming primordia not relizing it.

You can also just let it go too...it will be quite fine if it starts pinning in a few days. Hopefull your temps are mid 70's ish? Drop temps can help...a cold shock at this point would probalby slow things down though.

Thank you all shroomers,

i think i'll leave it as it is and wait...

This is another casing, same strain same day birthed/cased and all, the mycelium reached the surface on this one, but didn't continue growing like mad like the first casing....

could it be the small difference in substrate depth? A slight differnce in casing layer depth? Or maybe the few spots of uncolonized areas present in the first casing when it was cased?

its close to overlay, those spots where it is totaly white arent the best thing going but 95% of the casing is ready to go. Keep it wet and dont let that mycel colonize up top any more

No, that casing is no where near overlay.

Here is a okay picture of what overlay looks like, taken from our FAQ. His casing is no where near what this mild case of overlay is like.

Good for you.

Here's a picture of some really gnarly overlay.  The mushrooms only grew out from the sides.

why must you test my patience?? Take your nose out of hawks ass.
in this picture, the red areas are close to overlay as i stated before and will look like the pic you posted if left unattended. the blue areas are perfect as long as he knocks them down now.

Those spots are early breakthroughs the casing is not an overlayed casing thoughs spots if left unpatched could very well become overlayed or they may even form pins. Overlay is a condition which affects the entire surface. This is where the misunderstanding is tahoe. Now that second pick is definitely trouble an is referred to as stroma and will most likely overlay to the point of needing a good scratching and recasing at the very least.

And that is why i called it a midl case of overlay, it is the beginning. Why do you always have to be so hostile tahoe.

You need to give them babies some light to get them to grow up straight. I use a 75watt "daylite" bulb and hold it over a casing for 2 or 3 minutes to get a funky casing headed in the right direction. It takes no time at all.
