BRF/Verm + Spawn Bag?
    #4009297 - 04/03/05 05:24 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Would this work? I was thinking some of the BRF would stick to the sides and not get colonized which would be a risk for contams...

Biggest problem, would be it compacting itself under its own weight...1/2 pint jars stay nice and fluffy. You could make it work, but it would be more difficult then its worth IMO..why not just use whole grains?

It will not likely work. Spawn bags are not as forgiving as half pint jars. Spawn bags tend to get bacterial contamination more easily, and the chances are real high that you're bag will become bacterially infected before colonization unless you happen to own a flow hood. When you use whole grains like rye, there exist relatively dry gaps between the grains and the goods of most grains are locked inside a drier shell. Those gaps are good barriers for easy bacterial movement and the grain shells locks out bacteria a little. When you use BRF, you build a practical highway in the bag for bacterial movement in all directions. So if a single part of the bag has bacteria, which is very likely, the whole bag will go south in a couple days.

of course, but the worse part about using jars is having to full them up one at a time, then putting tin foil over. Its not hard to mix up the verm and brf and just put it all in a bag. A contam is a contam, if anything becomes contaminated theres no use to keep it, regardless of how contaminated it is. Right now I have a bag of brf and verm almost completely colonized, although it would not supprize me if a contam took over, I did not practice much sterilizing techniques while createing the syringe of spores. But so far there is no signs of contams and everything seems to be comming along quite nicely and quickly too, but that might have to do with the 10 ccs of thick spore solution I put in it.

I agree. I would never use jars after trying spawn bags. In a single large spawn bag, I can fit about 30 half pints worth of grain.

If the brf and vermiculite is working for you, keep with it. I personally tried brown rice with vermiculite and had trouble, but my place is a total mess. There are things probably molding somewhere in my refrigerator all the time.

What I like about rye is that it is very forgiving of less than sterile conditions and easy to mix up to speed up colonization. Mixing a bag of grain brings colonization time down to 11 to 14 days for me. That's not nearly as fast as my old half pint jars would colonize (7 was typical for those because I used so much liquid mycelium per jar), but it's fast enough anyway. If I don't mix the bag up--and it'll be hard for you to mix up BRF--then colonization takes another week.
