Well I'll be damned. My poppies are growing. When should I transfer.

Well I never thought it would really happen. I grabbed some of the good poppy seeds from the grocery store and planted them in some small pots just to see what would happen. I have the black thumb of death, so it was a surprise to see anything. The only thing is that the pots are to small for them to mature in. I know they don't like to be messed with, but I'm going to have to transfer them. My question is when is the best time to move them? How bige should I let them get before I try? Also, how big of a pot should I end up with for a cluster of about 5 plants per plot? Thanks and any other hints would be great.

I have no experience of transplanting poppies, but I think maybe you should do it soon, before the roots reach the sides/bottom of the pot. That way when you transplant them, you'll only be disturbing soil and the roots won't know that you've transplanted it! But if the roots reach the sides of the pot, then when you transplant you won't be able to avoid some contact with the roots, which might damage them and the plant won't like that.
Well that sounds reasonable to me at least, but yeah, I've never done it...
PS - good luck!

Hey i hear that poppies dont do well at all with transplanting, take the seeds you have left and just scater them in a weed free garden.

You want to transplant ASAP
I would refrain from putting 5 per pot as the plants will become root-bound quickly..
take care - OJ

If they are in plastic pots you'd might just want to cut the bottom off the pots and place them in bigger ones. If they are ceramic just tape them up good with tape and gently smash the bottom. Better not disturb them more than necessary.

i find root bound poppies fruit early. but the flowers and pods are tiny, well-spaced, draned and fertile plants become HUGE, like shrubs. and take almost all season to finish. pods are huge. potency is about the same by weight in my experience in the same strains

How old do seeds have to be before they won't germinate? I have over an oz and a half of seeds but i'm unsure of thier age.
