Easy straw chopping method
    #4009326 - 04/03/05 07:37 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Get a bale of straw from a farmer, nursery, etc. Sometimes grocery stores around here have them for $5. Spread some out in a big plastic or metal container. Take your weedeater and use it to chop the straw in 2"/3" pieces bagging it up when you're done and repeat until you have the desired amount. Make sure the weedeater is pretty clean from grass as there may be seeds that you don't want mixed up in the straw. It's alot cheaper than buying it pre-chopped. Alternatively you could use a lawn mower with a bag-catcher but it would be alot harder to keep the grass seeds out.

I just leave the bale whole stand it on it's end and take a long bread knife and start sawing down the sides in about 3 inch sections.. in about 15 minutes I'm done and very little mess...

Great idea, next time I have to fuss with straw this will come in handy. Have you tried those shredders you can get from a rental place? Always thought about picking one up and going to town on some straw for an afternoon.

Yes, but when you go with bigger quantities i think the weedeater is a good method.

Didn't you mean that the other way around?  An industrial chopper IS designed for bigger quantities.

According to agar, they are quite good...can chop up enough straw for your lifetime, in a day...

Problem is, Diver thought you were responding to his idea of using an industrial chopper, since you posted right after him...but you replied to the guy talking about slicing it with a knife...

I've asked several places if they have pre-chopped straw for mulching and they always tell me "No and you don't need it any smaller for mulching."
How expensive are the industrial choppers to rent?

I bet a chainsaw would do a pretty good job compared to a bread knife.

there are small mulchers on ebay for $100.. seem to be the best bet for a semi-commercial operation.. they can do wood upto 1.5" but really its just nice for straw...

rental place here said $45/day so...

for about $40 you can have a high quality guillotine, simply modify or remove
the guard and you're set for life...
