Where do spores originate?
    #4008765 - 04/03/05 04:33 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I have a friend that finds loads of shrooms. He told me that the feed the cattle eat has something in it that makes the shrooms grow in their dung. I always assumed that the shrooms just liked the dung because it was great fertilizer and just found their way there. Is he right? Would I be wasting my time hunting where the cattle are free ranging and aren't fed by the rancher? I have access to lots of land and some is free ranging and others aren't. I'm a beginner and any comments would help. Thanks.

I dont know the correct answer to your question, but, I know that you can feed horses apples with spores on the apple and mushrooms can grow from that dung.

Im sure the spores do settle as well on the dung and colonize, but, I think most are just eaten and passed through the animal.

The majority of spores are dispurse onto the ground and the grasses and the falling manure lands on the spores. That is their primary dispersal method of propgation. Other times wind and wild animals and birds carry spores around in a field and then the cows also eat the grasses with spores or the mushrooms in the grasses, but those are secondary methods of dispersal in a pasture. The moving around of the cattle will also let shrooms appear in a certain portion of the field where ther eis manure and then you walk to the other side of the field or anouther area and while there may be manure there may or may not be shrooms there and then you go back to another section adn the shrooms are there.

STijve believed that the manure of grain fed cattle produced a more potentshroom that the shrooms produced by alfalfa fed cattle. And then cattle are constantly moved around from paddock to paddock sot he grass regrows, later the cattle can be moved back into a psture and the shrooms appear. IT takes four to six weeks or longer for the shrooms to appear in the decomposed manure of most four-legged ruminants.

Sometimes, fresh manure will have mushrooms in that manure but that is rare.
