Weakling Stems
    #4008462 - 04/03/05 02:41 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I just completed my first flush the other day. BRF/Verm cakes. When I compare my mushrooms to other's cakes, my look so puny and wimpy. Their stems are skinny as hell, so that they can barely stay upright. In fact, 90% of them fall over, but still keepy growing. What could the cause of this be? Is it the strain or environment?

Thats because you're using the most basic of methods. You can't expect the beginner mushroom tek to yeild advanced shrooms.

If you want meaty shrooms that are 1-2" in diameter and 6-12" long and weigh 60-150g fresh, you have to do bulk. And that means bovine turds or compost.

Also, your shrooms might not be getting enough oxygen, so they have go grow way out in search of fresh air. It could also be the type of strain.

I have the 9500 Dual Profile pumping in air at full blast into two 6" Bubble Wands. I also put to small holes about 4" from the top. I open the top for a few seconds about 2-4 times a day. Are the exhaust holes maybe too small? I know the pump is sufficient cause its larger then a of the Teks say. Should I fan more then this? I want to keep the humidity up.

Fat mushies need moisture to thrive and become healthy. No moisture = tiny or aborted shroooms. DE case your cakes with moistened vermiculite and watch your yields go up!

If you DEC and roll in dry verm, it sticks to the wet cake easier...then mist untill verm is moist.

Why would anyone want to get more shrooms out of their substrate?

Maybe, just a thought here, your mushrooms arent falling over but are growing all crazy cause of lack of a definite light source to grow towards? Also sounds to me, mister poser, like a lack of moister in the cakes. Your recipe could be slightly off. GL

My light source is the overhead incandescent light fixture in the ceiling. My chamber is sitting on a table. 12/12. Is this light intensity good enough? The cakes are sitting on this crating thing about in inch thick over the perlite, instead of on the lids.

Yea, as long as the light is consistantly from one direction and not leaking through the sides of your grow box too much it should be fine. One time i had a casing and the shrooms were growing in all sorts of directions (cause i left it in the dark too long) and all i did was hold a light bulb (one of those "day light" bulbs) over it for about 1 or 2 minutes and the next day they were all growing straight up, no shit.
The problem probably lies in your recipe being slightly off. Using more water or better yet more verm would probably help. But in that case i would say go ahead and move on to grains cause it sounds like you got this process alright.

No i completely understand that I should move on to a better method. I am already researching the casing process for my other jars. I just want to get the max out of these cakes that I already fruited, ya know what I mean? Just looking for tips to improve what I am working with.
