Rye - is this normal or bacteria?
    #4008216 - 04/03/05 12:50 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

this is after soaking for 24 hours, simmering, pc'ing, cooling overnight, right before inoculating. I've inoc'd 5 that look like this and stopped there because I didn't wanna waste a syringe on inoculating contam'd jars.

Thats after soaking for 24 hours, then simmering for about 10-20 minutes to long. Its burst kernals, but i see no bacterial contam. It wouldnt bloom 12 hours after PCing anyway. Expect germination to be a little slow..but they should colonize fine..though the bottoms may stall a bit to the end..should have lots of water once its fruiting time though...usually when my rye turned out that burst..colonization would be hurt a bit..but not much, but fruiting was quite plentiful.

that jar looks pretty full, how do you plant to shake them. The grain is fine,

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

They're 3/4 full. Plenty of room to shake. when I inoculated, I only got into the grain as little as 1/8" Is this ok? I shaked it vigorously after.

1. The jar is too full. Consider 2/3 full to be maximum. You need room for the grains to move around when you bang the jar against a tire to break it up.

2. It doesn't look as though you washed the grains before cooking. Wash the dry grains under a faucet and pour off the wash water until it pours off clean. It's important to get all that grain dust out that will cause your rye to clump up as though it has glue in it. I hope it works out for you. Nothing wrong with the grains though, that isn't a contaminant.
