Newbie - Pins w/out complete mycelium?
    #3992879 - 03/30/05 10:36 PM (19 years, 21 days ago)

In one of my PF jars the mycelium has not completely grown around the cake, but I see tiny, tiny red dots, they are smaller than a pinhead and there's many. I have not noticed any significant growth so far. But could it primordia? The cake has only 70% mycelium coverage. If it is primordia, why so soon? Is this bad? if not what could it be? All other jars look great.

i was using a halogen light as my heater to keep temp. at 83.  I am thinking maybe that one jar did get some exposure, although I tried to keep jars completely covered.  What can I do now?

A few people have posted about how to save a cake from contams, or more exactly, how to seperate useable parts from non useable parts. I think Tahoe was one. Do a search.

If they keep pinning then I would take it out of the jar get a sterilized knife cut the uncolonzied part off and birth it.

casing confusion [Re: ShOoOg]
    #4003700 - 04/02/05 02:29 AM (19 years, 19 days ago)

Newbie here, cakes have completely colonized and I must decide what casing tek to follow. I do not have a pressure cooker. Originally I planned on following casing 101 because the directions on how to do it finally made sense to me. Great instruction. However, the casing mix is not explained other than 1: 4 ratio casing to substrate.
There are sooooo many casing options. I understand that the strain may not differ in growing qualities but it's apparent the casing does. Can I get some opinions and suggestions? I need to be able to find the ingredients readily available at local nursery or Lowes/Depot. I do not have a pressure cooker, please keep that in mind.
I appreciate it. I am very excited to graduate to the next level, but I've stalled. Can you allow your cakes to colonize too long? What are the repercussions?

yeah i think it is only verm... is this bad?, because i see many teks for casings with diferent ingredients..
And if i were to do some of them i would like to start off with plain old verm just to keep it really simple.. is it possible doing casings with just some verm???? thats my question,
ive read oyster shell and lime is great for this, even coco coir, but i would like to just start off with plain verm...

Just leave it in the jar until the pins mature. By that time, the cake will be fully colonized. Then you can remove the cake, harvest the shrooms..and I'd suggest breaking it up and casing it for the second flush.

Next time, ditch the light for heat.

Casing 101 tek: break cakes up into tiny whopper size pieces.

As I was gently trying to break up my cakes, some of the mycellium got smooshed and turned blue. Will it repair itself? Is there anything I can do to help? Should I remove it?

Also, I recommend, dunking your cakes since you using heating light. Dunking your cakes will allow it to rehydrate.

tahoes methods are quite questionable in their effectiveness, I'm yet to see
the cake fruiing that he had put to the torch and honestly it's been plenty of
time, the smartest option to deal with contaminated cakes is to simply get rid of it

No blue is a sign of someone putting the cake in the bag and mashing it up

Well, I thought it was due to being smooshed, but is that normal? Can I repair it?
