My first pressure cooker.....

Ok I just bought a 4.2QT pressure cooker made by Mirro. Here is the link to the exact one. http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/mirro4qt.htm It is a 10psi pressure cooker and it only holds (4) 1\2 pint canning jars at a time comfortably. I was looking thru the manual and it says that this pressure cooker is NOT intended for canning use. (even though it states that it can be used for canning on the box, but at the same time it says that it is a adjustable pressure cooker too...which it isn't). I know its really small, but I dont seem to have any luck steaming without contams + the fact that this is all I can afford. Has anyone ever used this pressure cooker before? Will I be able to sterilize with it only putting out 10psi? Even though it Contradicts itself on the box and in the manual, it should be safe for canning only 4 jars at a time, right?

Well unfortunatley it doesn't get up to the desired PSI. Your pressure cooker only goes up to 10, when what you want to kill all the little bad guys is 15 psi. I have not experimented with sterilizing at 10 psi, i cant say that you wont have any success at all. But more than likely you will be plauged with contams. How much was it?? You can get one at walmart that hold 4 qt jars and goes up to 15 psi for only 40 bucks. Well worth it.

The pressure cooker was $26, I thought it was a steal since on the box it says it has a variable pressure from 5-15psi. however after closer inspection it is only a 10 psi cooker. Think I should take it back and get a larger, more atuned one?

Wrong information, hawksapprentice. 10 P.S.I. is fine.
That Mirro is a loyal little workhorse, I used one for years while living in the dorms and constantly broke.
While that capacity is a bit small, it will do the job. If you can afford a larger one, go exchange it.

If you can take it back...I would.
If you have a walmart near you...go look for a larger Presto pc and save some $$$$.
I only use All American pc's...but they are expensive.
You could look for a good used All American pc on Ebay. A model 910 would be good a good start for you...and they are usually pretty cheap...$19.99 to $30.00 here are a couple for you to watch... Click here!~ And Click here!~
good luck!~

I also bought that model (10.psi)from wallmart, and ever since i've been wishing i didn't. your not the only one that fell for the false info on the box. i think what it is is they have two models and the other one is adjustable. everyone says just cook longer. prob with this is if i fill to line with water the water evaps before it has been long enough. can we refill and run again? or is that pointless? SPASTIC let me know if you find a way around our problem, and i'll do the same for you. i'll also keep an eye on this thread. maybe some body else can help us. peace.

I've had to refill and run again, it's getting the inside of the jar to the proper temp for the proper time that matters. Your jar won't cool off in 2 minutes. It worked for me until I got this bad boy from Lana for $45

Just add a little more water.
Are you using wide mouth 1/2 pint jars... or Tall 1/2 pint jars?
I'd suggest using the Tall 1/2 pint jars if you can fit them in your pressure cooker...that way you can have alot more water in your pressure cooker.

My PC only goes as high as .55 of a bar, which I believe is only 10psi's as well, Mine can only hold 4 1/2 pint jars in diameter, however I can fit 8 short 1/2 pint jars, by stacking them (4 on the bottom and 4 on the top), or 7 of the taller 1/2 pint jars (can't stack the taller ones). FYI, 10 psi's is fine for BRF/VERM substrate sterlization, simply increass your cooking time from 60 min's to 1.5h. I have never gotten any contams yet with my PC. The only time Ive gotten contams, was from inculation, and the contams were introduced VIA. the syringe tip. Now I use a Propane torch and sterlize the syringe tip before I insert it into the holes. The Psi you got is fine for Rice cakes, but you do need a 15psi PC, to sterlize rye grain, However, you can just use popcorn instead. My friend uses a 10 psi PC and he always uses popcorn with great success. Anyone else care to comment on this?

popcorn has given us nothing but trouble, at same conditions as our other, successful grains. The mycelium will grow and cover our popcorn, but doesn't fruit.

It will actually hold up to 4 wide mouth pint jars perfectly. Just pust about a quart and 3/8 of water in and it will go for a good 2hours if needed.

foaf has same one. yes 4 tall 1/2 pt. or 3 short wide mouth. has done corn at 45 min approx 4 batches. verm brf 45 min no probs on both (crossing fingers). on last batch pc'd for 30 min and had a slew of contams AARRGGGHH but thinks it was from innoc because only that strain contamed did 4 jars of that and all 4 contamed. the others pc'd at same time were fine using different strain. yes shoulda got the bigger one but this is I guess okay for now. It takes quite a while to do a dozen jars especially when using the short 1/2 pts. but still it does the job for now

Oh yeah... and same as far as the water level approx 3/8 to 1/2 on bottom. started out using enough water to go 1/2 way up the bottles and worked down from there. Not suggesting you do the same but use a little more til you find what works best for you.

A wide mouth 1/2 pint jar is just over 2 1/2" tall...so use 1 1/2" of water...and you should be fine.
A Tall 1/2 pint jar is about 4" Tall...so you could use more water in the bottom of the pressure cooker...was my point.
good luck!~

if you can boost your jars up a little (with a plate) you can add more water to be safe ( you can always add more), but if you fill to just over 1/2 way up your jars, you should be good. Don't forget to foil your jars.

Foaf is a total noob to all this and has not tried boiling(three days at 170) just seemed like too much work. so tried the elCheapo way using this 20$ pc. Just follow the teks, read all the info this site has to offer and you should be fine. He does not do everthing exactly as described but if you at least "try" to be sterile i.e. clean work surface, lysol, alcohol, and even cheap latex gloves and a dust mask you should have some decent results. here are a coupla pics of what can be accomplished "following directions". only been doing now for about 2-1/2 months
second try after first one contamed. This is from one 1/2 pt jar of popcorn cased.

Playin around 100% popcorn cake

Same cake next day

Why do I need 15psi when pressure cooking?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason for it is that at a pressure of 15 PSI (pound per square inch) water boils at a higher temperature (250?F, 121?C) than at ambient pressure.(212?F, 100?C). This high temperature kills the contaminants if applied for a sufficient long time span.
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23370
Maybe we should consider changing the FAQ???? Since it seems like alot of growers in this thread say 10 is fine.
