Hey man, I wasn't thinking it was a stupid question, really. The only time I think a question is stupid is when you've asked 100x and not listening to the answer. It just struck me as funny and not in a condescending way.
Anyway, I'm not sure how this works completely but maybe someone else can elucidate further. My understanding is that the vaccuum isn't important for this process. I think that it won't kill the mycelium but puts it in a vegetative state of suspended animation. I think this will happen vacuum or not. Don't take that as truth though. I don't know what I'm talking about really. This is a new preocess for me as well and I'm going by a memory from a thread I can't seem to find.

Agar-slants - test tubes cooled while lying almost flat thereby creating a long elliptical surface, when covered with mycelium, can be stored for years under sterilized mineral oil. To re-harvest, the mineral oil is drained off in a sterile [glove] box, the agar macerated with a sterile glass rod or scalpel, and the mycelium will reestablish itself for further innoculations. I've kept such tubes in the refrigerator for years. They do not always work, but what does?

You'll have better results using bits of myc colonized grains stored under distilled water. Theres been alot of research on this and this has taken the place of mineral covered agar believe it or not. I personally haven't tested it but from what I've read it's been proven to be superior.

Well, I'm old tec because I'm old One would think that any grain surface not covered in mycelium would deteriorate in water. It's been a long time since I dabbled in this sort of thing. Starting from spore-print once and a while seems the thing.

Ya theres been alot of changes since my first homestead kit back in the 70's The myc continues to colonize the grain even under the water just at a much slower rate. GL guys

Hey cool! I have a stolen poster for the "No B.S. Homestead Mushroom Growing Kit." Yeah, no 'bovine shit' just a neat acrylic bucket, spores and casing. It didn't work for me and then Prince George's County, MD outlawed head-shops and I couldn't exchange the kit - the store was gone.
