too much light?

What are the different theories on the possible effects of light during the growing process? I keep my cakes in relative dark (a closet), per the MMGG, but I check them out a couple times a day with a flashlight; I read recently that the author of 'the Mushroom Cultivator' suggested TOTAL darkness and only a few seconds of soft light each day. I've read elsewhere light has little or no effect on the shrooms.

Anyone have experiences/theories on the effects of light?

Light helps initiate pinning & shows them which direction to grow. IMHO... mimic nature is BEST (12/12). But, so long as they get some light, at the right times, they will grow. Not optimal, but grow.

squinting, possible astigmatism, general discomfort, and an inablility to see when you turn the light off
