To modify a Geo Metro or Not?
    #4005406 - 04/02/05 05:19 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Now before you laugh your asses off let me explain my situation.

I own a 1994 geo metro that my inlaws gave me for free from their car shop (some guy put in a new traany and didn't pay). It's in tip top shape. I just spent $500 and got new tires, new suspention, new brakes, oil/lube job.

The car runs great, smooth ride an ecinomical. I threw a $1500 stereo in it due to it's dome shape it provides unmatched sound.

I'm pulling in on average $2000 a week right now so I have the cash to do what I want cept buy a corvette (I wouldn't want one anyway.).

My problem is that while the insides are nice, the outside is a joke. It just looks ugly becuase it is a geo metro. The paint and body are pretty ok, better than most older cars. It's just a butt ugly shape. I'm a young guy and don't want to look...bad...

2 thing I have learned about money is, well 1st money DOES NOT make you happy, just makes life a little easier, and that being cheap really does pay off.

My question is this:

$15000 -$20000 for a new car? All new stuff, but no stereo and not ecinomical as this car?
$2000 to take it to maaco, get some body work and paint done?

Comments? Questions? Jokes?

DXM and Metros are made for each other. :smirk:

Seriously, if it gets you there, what is the problem? Be happy for what you have. I think a modified Metro would draw more derision than a normal one. Are you Mexican?

id say keep it why risk it in another car when you know this one is in good shape and has a new transmission.plus with gas prices going up a geo metro would be good.

That's the only good thing about it. It will be very good on gas. That's because the Metro has little more than a lawnmower engine driving it.

Hrm I aksed a very good scientist friend of mine who owns a bio-electrical firm. He's a pretty wise person. He says keep the car and just get in a new paint job, nothing bright or fancey, and maybe new wheels.

He said that way I'm only in it another $1000 or so and if I'm still not happy with it start saving up for a new car and keep this one as a backup.

Dont those things have like 3 cylinders? Even if you drop a ton of money into the thing , it still wont change the fact thats its a metro.

I would say find an old nissan 240 , but all the ricers have jumped on the bandwagon and have made prices go crazy. I payed 5 grand for my 240 4 years ago , and I still see them going for 4 grand with more miles than mine and base model to boot.

geo metros are great cars!  other than small i dotn know why people are ragging on them...ive gone on MANY road trips with them, and it is becase it was one of them that i was able to.  and ya stereos fuckign ROCK in these cars, but can crack easy if your big into sound.

i say keep it and mod it.  im the type of person that likes to do that sort of shit myself.  because of that i say learn how to fibreglass and you can have THE hottest metro around!

by the by they are made by suzuki (same type of deal as teh tracker), GMC doesnt have the mental capacity to think up an all around good usefull car.  bug, fast, expensive, poor quality is more their ball game (perfect for our market...)

majikfungus, yes they are 3 bangers, 1litre i believe.  but i think the 94's are 4 cyl.

have you ever thought of an electric conversion?  they are pretty easy in sprints.

Just paint the damn thing, you already got sound, get some good tires.

Don't go for rims and shit. If you rice it out you'll look like a fool.

Use it for long distance travel etc and get a car that you really want. I know you can afford it.

I'd keep the car and save your money for something else. A decent paint job would cost more than the car is worth. Keep it looking like shit. Consider it a theft deterrent. Nobody will ever think there is a $1500 system inside. I got a kickass alpine headunit, two alpine amps and a subwoofer in my 91 honda accord. Sounds great, but the car doesn't look like much. I just turn my system down when at stoplights and when pulling into my apartment complex and I never worry about my shit getting jacked.

man I test drove this and a cougar special edition both were sooo fast and very smooth

cougar is 3000 more, faster, and more options...focus is more economically sounds, and with added ground effects would look quite nice (I've seen them in town e/ effects and love them)

the engine of both cars where noisy w/ quite cabs, but the engine noise sounded like a race car, something I like.
