BIGFOOT and Human (Mis)Perception
    #4004461 - 04/02/05 10:29 AM (19 years, 14 hours ago)

There was a documentary on the TV recently to capture evidence of Bigfoot on tape with the latest scientific gear. The young crew set camera traps in the woods that would be triggered by large animals, had sound recording gear and used FLIR (forward-looking infrared) for night filming.

The young and optimistic crew repeatedly jumped to false conclusions based on their need to believe in Bigfoot.

1. Recording an eerie animal sound.
A. Because it could not be readily identified, it was likely to be a Bigfoot.

2. One of the cameras from the trap was gone, the other was up on a tree limb that had cracked or was torn off.
A. Either humans who were trying to protect Bigfoot, stole/damaged the camera. or
B. Bigfoot himself had done it.

3. Got a nighttime thermal image from across the swamp.
A. "Wow! Look at the size ot that creature. It is w-a-y bigger than a man.
B. See how he hides behind the tree then crouches down so we cannot see him.

Actual Conclusions:

1. Probably a puma based on the sound signature.

2. Replaying the video showed that a dozen vultures had landed on the rotted limb where the camera was placed and it snapped. The other camera was likely stolen by a hiker as denoted by human footprints in the area.

3. Videotaping a man in the daytime at the exact same position as the unknown creature for comparison showed the the "huge" animal was about 1/5th as large as a man. Most likely a raccoon.

Swami's final note: All of these things are telling about how data can be twisted to attempt to meet the experimenter's expectation. At least this crew corrected their own mistakes, albeit very grudgingly.

Note how error #3 reinforces my oft-repeated observation that this sort of nighttime gross misperception goes to the heart of UFO sightings.

you are using the same false methods of conclusion they did to connect this incident with the actual existence of bigg foot and UFO's

I made no false conclusion. People erroneously twist data to meet their desired view or expectation. This is fact.

Seems you misperceived the entire post based on your a priori opinions. Thanks for reconfirming my observation.

you:
Those guys have made false conclusions, so:
UFO sightings must be based on the same kind of jumping to conclusions

Why Is it that I who believe in UFO's have never seen one, but have seen "falling stars" and all kinds of fast silent plane lights in the night sky? shouldn't my excectations make me believe I was seeing an UFO instead?

UFO sightings must be based on the same kind of jumping to conclusions.
*sigh* What is the NUMBER ONE object in the night sky misidentified as a UFO according to skeptic and UFO groups alike?

Why Is it that I who believe in UFO's have never seen one, but have seen "falling stars" and all kinds of fast silent plane lights in the night sky? shouldn't my excectations make me believe I was seeing an UFO instead?
Your question is a false dilemma and not really honest. The Bigfoot researchers, if they saw a grizzly bear in the light of day at close range, would not say it was a Bigfoot. But put the same animal in shadow behind trees in low light at a distance, and they may very well.

The perceptual coloration comes in when one has insufficient data. You already knew what a shooting star looked like so did not "fill in the gaps" with your expectation as there were no gaps.

Number one object? Don't know, comets?

Why is my question not honest?

Venus is responsible for the majority of UFO sightings, followed by the moon.

Your question did not appear honest as it already contained the answer. Were you looking for genuine knowledge or merely to set a trap?

My intention was to set a trap, because I am a living proof that there are holes in your generalization theory.

I don't understand how can moon and venus be responsible for that.
They appear motionless unless there are wind driven clouds passing by.
The phenomena that started the whole night sky UFO thing are totally different. They are usually as fast as comets, and can make instant 90 degree turns on either way. That's what makes them UFO's and not planes or comets.

They're seriously still looking for Sasquatch?

I was under the impression that even if there was any "Bigfoot", it would most likely be dead by now.

My intention was to set a trap...

As I surmised, then you have the audacity to ask why I thought it dishonest which was yet another dishonesty. Pretend that the people you are discussing things with are mature adults, act in kind, and we might make actual progress.

But people use "traps" all the time on these forums to prove points, they are like rhetorical questions, nothing mean about it

I heard the lastest theory about Bigfoot is that it is some kind of trans-dimensional being. Apparently they have red glowing eyes now, too. Watch out!

Although it may be rooted in the same type of misperception as the Bigfoot-case, I do find the Mothman-case to be more interesting.

What do you make of that one, Swami?

Half of the Mothman story was about the local bridge collapsing and an alleged prophecy of some sort of "doom". It was an old bridge in major need of repair. No great mystery there. As to the sightings, I expect because it was a small town, that people's perceptions were colored by the oft-repeated stories and it was a form of oneupsmanship or ego-boosting to claim to have seen the Mothman.
