Casing .. and taking off the lid
    #4004613 - 04/02/05 01:12 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I want to put some post-casing containers in with my casing im trying to initiate pinning on.

I covered the pre-pinning ones with foil all around so that light could not get through.

Is there any harm in taking the lid off to check the other casings .. i.e. introducing contams to my pinnning casing?

Contams will land on your casing surface at any opportunity. It won't be a problem, assuming your air exchange is up to "par".

Why wouldn't it be a problem given moist verm to grow on?

There are no nutrients in verm, making it VERY poor for anything to start growing, molds included. The only reason myc colonizes it, is because theres a huge layer of living activity below it...a few spores landing on the verm shouldnt be a problem.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet..by now your casing already has a few mold spores on it. They're everywhere..you just have to provide a shitty environment for them to grow in (ie no uncolonized nutrients). Mycelium also has enzymes that fight off contams..

If i just birthed a casing would it be ok to fan the air for better exchange?

Also would make a hole or two in the side of my rubbermaid and filling with polyfill be beneficial??? without losing humidity?

how big should the holes be?

Yes, fanning is recommended. Holes will help. Make them about a 1/2 inch. Casing's don't require as much humidity as cakes so the holes shouldn't hurt your humidity. Just fan and mist. The casing itself will put off some humidity due to evaporation. Good Luck.

No. There is no problem. You don't need a HEPA either. People who are saying that don't have a clue.
