birthing tonight... a few quick questions
    #4004470 - 04/02/05 10:31 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I plan on birthing about 5 of my 11 jars tonight, and i want to dunk them first today. Aside from these questions, feel free to give any birthing advice to a first timer.

Can I use tap water, and if not, does boiling water distill it?

Also, if moisture touching the mycelium on the inside of the jars can turn it yellow, will dunking the cakes turn them yellow?

And lastly, do you keep the cakes on the lid of the jar when you put them in the terrarium?

Hey

I can tell you that from my experience, the dunking does not produce the yellow you refer to in the wet jars. Also, the lids on my first grow caused a refraction of light that got my cakes growing shrooms from the bottom of the cakes and towards the bottom of my tub. I took out the lids, put the cakes on the perlite, and have had nothing but upwards growing mushies since!

Dunking will not turn them yellow.

Tap water is fine, add a little but of h202 if you're nervous, but I don't.

It depends on what kind of terrerium you use, are you running a PmP, perlite, martha, etc.?

If PmP, set directly on rocks.

If perlite, I would set on lids.

I am using a terrarium where i have to mist often to keep the humidity up... drip sheild, chicken wire 1 inch off of the bottom.

Do you use perlite too or only mist?

If you just mist then I would suggest just setting them on the bottom.

Congrat's on making it to your first Birthday. Yes you can dunk in tap water but I would add some H2O2 to your water, 1:10 ratio. H2O2 to water. After dunking I would recommend rolling in dry, sterilized vermiculite and double end casing. That yellow you see inside your jars is probably mycelium waste(piss). More then likely your cakes will turn a little blue after dunking and rolling from bruising. Normal.
No, I wouldn't set them on perlite. Go to the local nursery and look for these. I found them for a nickel a piece.

They work great. Good Luck. Move to casing's as soon as possible.

I don't like my lids getting rusty...so no...I like to put cakes on alum foil on top of the perlite.

Road, you ought to check out those little plastic containers. When in the chamber they automatically place your cakes far enough apart for growth. If you need to take a cake out it's easy and if you mark them it makes keeping up with all your cakes simple. Especially with dunking after flushes. Eliminate all these problems and case. Not as hard as Noobie's think.
