Would using WBS as a substrate rather than BRF/Verm make a difference in a 50/50 casing?

Yes..and rye grain as a substrate would be even better then WBS. And straw would be a better substrate then rye. And poo would be a better substrate then straw.
Id suggest, mixing in verm with your whole grains though...helps...

I slightly disagree. I think grain (in general) is the better substrate for cubies, and a few other species. The only reason bulk subs are better is because you can spawn to them. Less pc'ing, and less jars. If someone else did all of the work, I would definitely prefer to use say 5 L. of colonised grain than 5 L. of colonised bulk sub.
Just my opinion...

If you are in a more urban area, rye (aka "rye berries") can be found at many health-oriented grocery stores in the bulk section or regular healthfood stores. If you are in a rural area, you can find it at some feed stores. It can run from 10 cents to $1 a pound depending on how much you buy and where you buy it.

Actually we dont disagree at all.
I only say its better because its so easy to create more of the substrate at a time. I can spend 20 hours a week doing straight grain...or 20 hours a week using my grain to spawn to hpoo....the later will produce far more mushrooms...per amount of substrate though, I agree with you..

I am finally getting the hang of these emoticons. I used to use as a big smile. Looking back, I hope people didn't think I was laughing... lol
