Without regards to price, which would be better, horse poo or worm castings? Or a mixture of the two?

H/poo is FREE, if you find a source & a better substrate - to boot.

I know it is free, that is why I didn't want to count price. Castings seem to be better for plants, but shrooms do tend to like less decomposed grains better. I have never worked with either, was just wondering if poo really was better.

disregarding the price, but what about the smell? depending on your situation there could be a pretty bad smell from different steps of working with poo as opposed to castings. castings smell like fertile soil and can be past. straight out of the bag. this is not the case with poo straight from the horses ass. look up the necessary steps of poo prep, for certain persons this can be the determining factor. ive seen both excellent and mediocre results from both. seems like poo may be better, but there are many factors in determining whats right for you.

Castings...smell worse then aged dried horse shit.
I've found so far...a mixture works well. about 2 quarts of h poo, 2 quarts verm, 1.5 quart castings, mix with 1 quart of spawn and throw 1/2 a quart of spawn on top and you have a nice casing. So far that casing hasnt fruited yet, but it colonized quicker then 4 quarts h poo, 1 quart verm and 1 quart spawn mixed in with 1/2 a quart on top. Both are waiting to fruit and hpoo was really only a day behind...if that. Just bithed a few days ago and they sit next to eachother on the same shelf so I should have some results in a week or so..

you are never going to convince agar that anything works bettered than horse poop. and if you can't convince him otherwise methinks you shouldn't do anything else but go for horse poop

Ha, no.
Dung Brother's. 10-15 LBS. compost would throw out a quarter pound or more dry, easily. No casing layer. DB > Horse poo any day.

Yeah Dung Bros was the shit. They really had some mean horse poo.
I can fruit off my source of horse poo(from my uncles farm) without a casing layer.

Agar does not think Horse poo is the best...just the best available right now.
In a month (hopefully), what agar thinks is better then H poo will be commercially available. Hopefully it will even beat out Dung Brothers...from the look of the pictures.
I should note, my expeiments with the mixture, isnt to find something better then Hpoo...I feel H Poo would work better then castings..or anything (except compost). However H Poo, has to be bought online...worm castings are cheaper and can be found in larger amounts locally...I'm just attempting to find recipes that will work pretty much the same as H Poo, or close to it. Hearing Agars compost will be available in like 4-8 weeks though, makes me less worried...

yes, aged horse shit doesnt smell bad. but if they have to get it fresh and prep it themselves and live in a high profile situation castings may be a better choice. based solely on performane id prob choose the aged horse shit, but it seems like its not practical for all people depending on their shituation.

Very true...I can't get it fresh and leech/dry/prep myself...no room for the smell or the visual of it (apartment in the middle of the city)...I get it shipped aged and dried as it is...castings though are moist and stink as is...though they say oderless on the outside of the bag...its mainly when you start mixing it and cooking it that it smells..hpoo didnt have a problem but like I said, it was preped for me.

Point well taken scat, be sure to keep us informed on what you think after a few runs of both side by side.
