Spawning a Straw or Hay Bail?
    #4003440 - 04/02/05 02:47 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Has anyone tried spawning directly to an entire bundled straw bail? I know contams would kill it inside, but what about an outdoor grow? What about spawning to a large hay bail as well? I know hay isn't as good as straw, but if you could actually coax an entire bail into becoming colonized it could produce some major shrooms.

how would you get spawn in to the centre of a bail????
and if you could the inside temp would probably cook the mycelium.
You would have to be quite innovative to find a way to pasturize a bail of straw.

You could soak the bail of straw in 170 degree water and be fine I think. But if you do it outside you can fight off more contams without having to pasteurize.

I was thinking about making a few quarts of honey water and just pouring it into the bail. Eventually it would colonize the entire bail. If anything it will colonize the outer layers of straw where it can breath and where there is less heat. You could fruit that, and as the outer layers are slowly removed from harvesting and using up their nutes it would start to colonize the inner layers. I may actually try this sometime for fun.

Brew means, the myc will generate heat as well as the other organisims living in the straw. Like a compost pile...the inside could get over 106 degrees, just sitting room temp.

Pouring liquid myc over pasteurized straw will cause contams..if anything. And dont forget pasteurized things need to colonize within 2 weeks or contams can set in. And how do you plan on keeping the straw moist enough to colonize that whole time? Straw losing its moisture quickly.

This could end in contams or just a bale of dried straw that nothing grows on...either way..its not going to end you up with mushrooms.

if the middle wasn't too hot you could take a piece of rebar or other similar metal bar, push into the middle and pour a little of your culture inside. then remove bar and repeat in other locations.

I once had a bale outdoors that colonized, but it never fruited. Then again i didn't do anything but pour quarts or culture into it. I didn't cover with plastic or anything like that, i just let it do its thing. Although, when some of that straw was thrown in the compost it did fruit.

So i would say go for it. try throwing a casing layer on it, cover the whole thing in compost when colonized, or anything else you would see fit that could help. It is an experiment right? form a hypothesis and test it out.

Good Luck

Piece of cake   Use a 55 gallon drum ontop of at 200,000 BTU propane burner.  Many folks do this often, thing is they break up the bale

Its been tryed many times but the inside temp gets messed up somehow...
I have read a lot on this and there is a term that is used that tells you what will happen when you try and do a huge amount ....
Anno might remember it

If a moist hay bale has been sitting in the sun, temperatures can be hot enough to kill any mycelium as little as 4" deep from the surface of the bale.

Was just a thought for something to play with on the side. I figured a hay bail was completely impractical but I thought that a straw bail may be doable. When the temps outside get a little warmer around here I may try this. Not like a few quarts of LC would really matter.
