Straight Verm will work, just not as well.

Hey, straight vermiculite will work, but no, not just as good. Your 9*9 pan is probably a little big for two 1/2 pints. Remember you want between a 2-3 inch substrate layer. Good Luck.

Who said the top layer has anything to do with nutrients?

The casing layer is there to provide moisture, a contam barrier, and a microclimate within which to fruit. Without coir/peat, you have a shitty microclimate and cant tell when the verm is drying out (coir changes color as it dries).

If you have a PetCo or PetSmart, you can find coco coir. Dont ask people, as I'm sure you already know, people are idiots..look yourself in the reptile section for Bed A Beast or Eco Earth ect. Also Hydroponic stores have large pricks of it.

Some wise advice there! Seems to be a problem in alot of stores today. Almost gone is the day where you used to be able to ask a salesperson something and they would bend over backwards to help you. The best coir deals we have seen were on the net and it was something like 2 bucks for a brick that expands to 9 lt. The stuff is not that heavy for shipping either.

your always on the money...with your answers.

Also look for this brand ---> Forest Bed by T-Rex...at petco.
They usually have a 2 for 1 deal once a year.
I still have 10 bricks from last year.

Actually the best coir deals you'll find (which are on the net) are for the bales of coir. Its a brick just the same but REALLY big. Expands to 70-80 liters instead of just 7-9. Bales can be found at the hydro stores like I mentioned earlier too. Them bails go for like 15 bucks plus shipping. Shipping is a bit on lots of bricks of a bail...not tons..but like 10 bucks.

RK,
 Thanks for your always kind words. :smirk:

In my experiments the straight verm casing versus a 50/50 was much slower to fruit, in the same conditions.

Took about a week longer to pin. Not that my experiments are anything valid, since I only did this once, but still just another reason not to do it.

I plan on going with a 50/50 [Verm/coco coir], when my straw based substrate, inuclated with rhy grain, has finished incubating. Mainly because I want my casing layer too actually look like acasa casing layer, and because it will give a better pinset IMHO. For the record, however, my friend uses just stright verm for his casings [colnized popcorn with straw substrate]. He got 2oz's dried on his first flush, in a shoe-box sized container!1
