Sanitizing chemical question

I brew my own beer, which in someways can be a lot like growing mushrooms. You're creating a sterile chamber/medium for a fungus to grow in. In brewing it is common to use no rinse Iodophor solution, which you just soak your equipment in Iodophor (an iodine based sanitizing solution) and water for about 2 minutes, and then you just let it air dry. Does anyone know if this could be applied to mushroom growing, or would the iodine hurt the mycelium? This stuff is cheap, fast, and effective. You pay 3 bucks for a 4 oz. bottle and you only use 2 capfuls per 5 gallons of water.

I don't think so. What step of the process are you inquiring about anyways? "Mushroom growing" could imply many, many stages and different processes.

Sorry, I mean as use in sanitization of all your equipment for growing mushrooms, i.e. jars, lids, fruiting chambers, whatever you want. I'm not saying that this is a way to get around pressure cooking, but it beats bleach.

Best cheapest sanitizing agent I have found is one mist bottle full of white vinegar, another mist bottle full of H202.
Spray one on, wait a minute, spray other on, wait a minute, wipe down with clean paper towels (doesnt matter which is sprayed on - first).
That combo will KILL.....E-Coli, Salmonella, Aids & host of almost all other nasty stuff, including mold spores.
Just prior to using any tray, or container -- alc swab with 70% alc & allow to evap. 70% alc is MORE EFFECTIVE, as evap time is longer than higher % alc.

Agar, can that vinegar/h202 combination stand in for diluted bleach solution? I get a little sick of bleach fumes. Also, I just had 7 jars go bad from bacterial contam. I like to inject contammed jars full of a diluted bleach solution (grain quarts). Could you inject contammed jars with equal parts vinegar and h2o2 to kill off the nasties before emptying them out? Thanks!

NO
Oddly.... this sanitizing method is not AS effective, if combined togather.
One seems to remove helmet, other kills it with head shot - after helmet is off.
Suggest you find LYSOL in bottles. Inject that into funky jars, instead. It will do the same job.

ALSOBuying in bulk bottles, then filling a spray mist bottle, is a LOT cheaper than buying lysol in spray cans. agar is FRUGAL.

I'll keep this in mind next time I sanitize, and thanks for the info. I'm still wondering if iodophor will work. I'm assuming that it shouldn't hurt the spores, as the residual iodophor left on brewing equipment doesn't effect the yeast (yeast is pitched in at 10 million cells/ml, I don't know how many spores/ml are entered into a jar).
