Youth - don't waste it!

When I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts, my Dad, brother and I would go visit the Tiffany's about once a month for a nice evening of ping-pong and comraderie. The Tiffs were country boys and all fast livers. In my last meeting with them, Dwight was 18, my brother was 17, David was 16, I was 15, Donovan was 14 and Mark was 13. It was a good mix and we always had fun! The Tiffany's were all smokers and drinkers and all but Mark, bragged about how many girls they banged. I was jealous as I had made little progress in that department. The Tiffany boys all had that kind of James Dean recklessness and good looks. They were confident and cocky.
Fast forward 34 years. Dwight has had much of his throat and larynx removed. He was big on tobacco chew and had oral cancer. Mark, the youngest, is living on the street, And saddest of all, David and Donovan are both dead from alcohol abuse.
My brother has a wonderful family and is an elite runner despite a dangerous blood disorder and I feel that I am just coming into my prime as I approach my fifth decade and my boyhood friends are buried in the ground. Very sad. Luck or choices?
Sorry if this is too preachy for you, but don't waste your lives. You are NOT invincible and you will never be younger than you are today. I wish you all well and a safe journey.
Swami out.

We come from THAT generation Swami.I too have been to many childhood friends funerals. Our generation lived fast and hard from Acid and tripping thru the cocaine dayz and nights and on we burned youth like it was rechargeable.I did enjoy my youth but not so much I joined those underground.Maybe that is the key enjoy it but don't destroy your future doing so. Cocaine came close to getting me as it was" a harmless stimulant less toxic than caffeine",technically true but in reality a lie .As I am entering MY fifth decade I am still pretty good considering all the crap my youth heaped on my carcass. To us children of the late sixties early seventies there was a definate survival of the fittest culture buried beneath the partying. WE SURVIVED! I take pleasure each day in that and I hope you do too Swami, kinda "there but for the grace of god go I" for some.I hope the wisdom of your post is not lost on the young who read it. WR

Yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah... What would an old-timer like you know, anyway?
*Disclaimer: In case anyone didn't figure it out already, this post was meant to me sarcastic.
