weird auto scrolling
    #3998345 - 04/01/05 02:05 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Dunno what's causing this but several times a day my computer will, without any input from me, decide to scroll down whatever page I'm viewing at the time. It's a minor annoyance, but I'd like to get rid of it. Problem is I have no idea what is causing the problem. I think it may be a problem with my monitor, but I don't have a second monitor to plug in to test my theory.

Anyone have something like this happen to them or have an idea what could be causing it?

I got a new wireless optical mouse for Christmas so maybe that is it. I will plug in my old mouse and leave it there overnight then check in the morning to see if the screen elves were at work again..

it may very well be your mousing surface. optical mice work great on anything that is NOT reflective. if you've got a reflective and/or shifting color-type pad replace it.

optical mice can be quirky. mine works perfectly but i notice that my wife's will sometimes cause the pointer to jump ever so slightly either back and forth from one coordinate to another or makes the same sized little jumps all the way across the screen. scrolling, OTOH, should require a button press. note that clicking the the scroll wheel on wheeled mice defaults to a "scroll-mode" where moving the mouse is equivalent to clicking and dragging the right hand scroll bar.

also, it occured to me that cheap/crappy USB components/cables could be causing some crosstalk. take note of what USB devices might be in use when the scrol problem occurs. if, for example, it happens while your burning a disk on your USB CD burner then...

good luck

Almost always this is the cause. Sometimes the mouse port on the logic board fails causing these symptoms, but much less often. If the mouse port fails, use a USB mouse to get around the problem.

Possibly someone has planted a macro on your computer.

Probably mouse configuration
