Checking for "Field Capacity"
    #3997291 - 03/31/05 09:43 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Here is a good way to check your compost/poo/casing for "field capacity".

First of all, I recommend you use a decent digital scale for this.

The way I got it figured, once you know what field capacity is (looks and feels), you'll know what to look for next time.

First of all, take your compost/poo/casing that you feel is field capacity and weigh out 100 grams of it.

Now take that 100g of substrate/casing and stick it in the oven to dry. 350F for 2hrs or however long it takes to become FULLY dry.

Make sure its fully dry, then weigh it out. It should weigh ~25 grams.

If it is over ~25 grams, use more water.
If it is under ~25 grams the use less water.
(I think thats right. Kind of confusing )

Field capacity of compost/poo/casing is 75% moisture content.

Like I said earlier, once you know how "field capacity" substrates/casings look and feel, then you will know exactly what to look for.

Hope this helps somebody

Thanks madhatter.... Well put and simple really.

I haven't read any explanation quite so concise.  Makes intuitive sense as well.

I've enjoyed your comments here on the board.  Keep it up

How do I add more water to the substrate if I've already mixed and cased?

This post is 12 years old and is a pretty silly way to check field capacity anyways.

If you have already spawned to a bulk substrate the only way to add water is to give a heavy misting.

Its important to check for field capacity *before* that point. If your substrate is too dry, fix it or dont use it

I think I just came to a very scary realization.

Every tub I've ever spawned, I always add a small bit more raw sink water. Or mist the surface heavily.

Could unpasteurized water immediately upon spawn cause problems?

People dunk their grains (I don't) and mist substrates. So no.
