We Have Entered an Oil "Super-Spike" Period...So Says GS
    #3997105 - 03/31/05 07:05 PM (19 years, 1 day ago)

http://money.iwon.com/ht/nw/bus/20050331/hl_bus-l31481930.html?PG=home&SEC=news

Does anyone else find it incredibly unethical that Goldman Sachs has "predicted" an oil spike of over $100/barrel, causing the price of oil to artificially inflate?

Oh well. Once oil hits $80+ and alternative fuel becomes more economical, all the people bitching about the US' use of oil will be begging them to go back to it. We are in for some interesting times.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I'd like to see gas prices jump to their highest inflation adjusted prices ever.

I'm ready.

Yep, thats kind of why i brought it up.  Im ready for it.  Im just a poor working-class guy and the only things I rely on oil for is my short, walkable ride to work and electricity.  You could argue that food relies an oil and energy to be produced but somehow I don't think that would be much of a problem.  Other than that, I don't have very far to fall and I believe the transition to alternative fuels would actually be a good thing for many of us in the US...the Saudis may not like it very much though.

The Saudis and all the other people in control of the oil will make money hand over fist during the energy crisis.

I bought a diesel VW rabbit last fall. For $400 I can convert it to run on vegetable oil.

Even without the conversion, I'm getting 50 MPG Shit can go up to $5-$10 a gallon for all I care.

Sam's Club sells corn oil for $3 a gallon.

It will hit EVERYONE. Trains, trucks and ocean shipping rely on petroleum products. Fertilizers and insecticides are manufactured from petroleum. How will this affect the price of food? How will this affect the price of constructing new shelter (materials have to be transported)? How will this affect electricity rates (natural gas demand will increase as an alternative to petroleum and fuel oil prices will rise)? How will this affect the cost of manufacturing - it takes energy. Then of course there are the myriad of other products made from petroleum... think about the widespread use of plastics.

I understand that but initially it will affect the SUV driving people much more than the people like me.

It would be a change, thats for sure, but I think people could cope. I guess I'm kind of being selfish because im poor, own nothing, and im highly skilled so I could make due and i don't have far to fall. People with families and dependents may have a harder time making ends meet because they have built thier family on this fragile infrastructure...but i guess that is the sacrifice you make for love, family, and happiness.

Watch the house of cards come tumbling down!

I'm planning for the worst: that alternative fuels will not be able to make up for the increasing lack of oil.

Get yourself a vehicle that runs on diesel, and more importantly get yourself a bycicle!

i think they are full of shit. $105 a barrel would screw our economy up, and the rest of the world would be fucked.

there are alot of capped wells here in Texas and Oklahoma that would be uncapped if the price went up to $70 a barrel.

Tredal, IMO Alternative fuels has OPEC scared. they see a future (soon) without the U.S. having to buy so much oil from them.

That's exactly why prices need to increase now. A gentle slope now, or a brick wall later. Take your pick.

I too am down w/ the price of oil going up. They pay like 10$ a gallon over in Europe, I paid 2.31$ today.

Theres a reason they dont sell alot of expeditions and navigators and shit in Europe...And they're probably the better for it....

I'm one of the SUV people that you are referring to...but many of us actually NEED SUV's to get around...we're not all soccer moms that use an SUV as a status symbol.

The average vehicle gets about the same mileage in Europe as in America, they just drive fewer miles I believe.

Also, I believe it's closer to $6 a gallon.

you ppl are missing the obvious ..$100/bbl oil will only make an already bloodthirsty american public even more hostile...they will respond by electing even more radical right-wing candidates to office..who will escalate the policy of waging aggressive warfare in the middle east...

the benefits of the post-oil society will be realized..but only at the unnecessary cost of hundreds of millions of lives...

i'd have to say annapurna's right
we'll definatly start invading places like south america for oil under the pretense of the war on drugs..and do it more so in the middle east under the pretense of the war on terror..we'll set up oil republics just like the old banana republics of south america

And it won't really hurt SUV drivers that much..because if you can afford an SUV you can afford to trade it and get a better car. The people that its going to hurt are the poor who take care of one car and can't trade it in for another...especially once everyone starts realizing what a bargain used TDI diesels are.
