Make your own Photons/Party Lights!

Some of you may say "you're stupid/crazy/have to damn much free time," i say: "you're absolutely 100% correct!!
In this post I will describe how to make your on party lights or ?poi? as hudsonismss put it using the same high power LED?s used in the Photon brand lights for a fraction of the cost.
Things you will need to make your party light:
6V or 9V DC power source (6V can be aquired utilizing 4 AAA batteries in sequence
1.5V each * 4 = 6V total output)
As many Nichia Corp (the company that makes the Photon LEDs) Leds that you want to make into lights. info here, can be purchased at B.G. Micro ? the $2.49 ones, or Action Electronics
?? Diameter tubing (Found at hardware store)
Wire (22 gauge, preferably 2 colors)
Insulated Crimp Butt Connecters
Fishing line
Electrical tape
Pliers (needle nose and the other kind)
Wire Cutters (and/or stipper)
Optional things:
Solder and a Soldering iron
Switches
Bolts that will fit snugly in the end of the tubes (for weight, makes then easier to twirl)
Step 1: Getting the wires in the tube
Get your tubing cut to length. To find a good length hold the tubing in your hand, pinch it in between your thumb and index finger and pull it up the inside of your arm. The longest you want it is halfway up your bicep.
Get your fishing line and feed it through the tube making shure to secure the end that u r not holding.
Take your fishing line and tie it around 2 pieces of wire that are several inches longer then the tube, and hopefully 2 different colors and proceed to pull the wires up through the tube.
Step 2: prepping the wires
After feeding your wire through the second tube (hopefully you're doing 2 ) put them alongside each other and mark 2 INCHES BELOW where you want the LEDs to be.
after you have marked your tubes, cut a slit at each mark. Start at the one closest to the "handle"
Now take your needle nosed pliers and pull 1 wire 3/4 of an inch out and cut the loop.
Now take your wire cutter/stripper and take the shielding off of 1/2 the exposed wire and twist the copper strands together.
Repeat until you get to the end of the tube. Then if you are using the bolts (for weight, makes then easier to twirl) take BOTH wires out thru the last slit before the end, and insert the bolt into the tube.
Step 3: connecting the LEDs
Grab your Crimp butt connecters and your leds. connect the LONG end of the LED lead to what is going to be the POSITIVE wire, and if you're daisy chaining the lights, the wire that's positively connected on the first LED goes to the NEGATIVE side of the second LED and so on until the last LEDs positive is connected to the positive wire. You may want to just twist the wires around the leads and put a AA battery (for 1 LED, for 2+ 9V battery) on the end to check if you have it right.
Step 4: Power and Switches
here's how the one i'm making in the pictures is set-up.
i found the switches to just be more hassle then they're worth. but here are a few other ways you could do it.
A) basic setup, how the Photons are setup
B) Like mine but with a switch that turns all lights on/off
C) 3 separate switches to control each individual light
4 AAA battery holders and 9V battery connecters are available at radioshack.
that's perty much it... the rest is self-explainatory...
now here's me flickin around the ones i just made.
oh if you clicked on this looking how to make regular photons, don't... i've tried, they arn't nearly as cool as the original ones.
buy em for $10.50 apiece from lights4raves.com, or do a search on ebay for them, and those same guys sell them on there for like $9 each.
realistically speaking, i don't think that anyone will do this, but i just thought that i'd share this badass trip-toy.
peace
to move

one problem though -
but putting the three LEDs in parrallel like that will just burn them up. (the picture with the three switches)
In series the three LED's get 3V each, but in parrallel they get all 9V each
other then that it looks like a cool toy to me
You approach the turnstiles and know that when
you get there you have to give the man two dollars
or he won't let you inside but when you get there
everything goes wrong.

... or, just close your eyes and picture them. Then the damn things will run forever!
Deep in the vortex I rest... clueless to time, for madness has its own circle.

thanks for pointing that out widex!
i was just trying to give people ideas on what's possible...
one could do it on a 6V power supply and only run 2 at once... i need to fix that.

you can do just about anything with led's and a little voltage. Getting a chip that has pre-mapped designs might be cool. Or make them fade on and off might be cool lookin too.
