Grain wetness?
    #3994353 - 03/31/05 09:12 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hello

After soaking, rinsing, simmering, rinsing again, and draining overnight, the grains still retained alot of moisture.

When loaded into the jars, it looks as if the jar is filled with water.

Is this normal?

They should appear wet when you load your jars, pre-PC. After the PC run, you will shake them up to distribute wet looking grains w/ the drier ones. Overall, you should see very little or no moisture when it's done. If your grains are sitting in pools of water AFTER pressure cooking and shaking, you're definitely going to have issues.

Either one, or both. I like a soak and simmer, but the simmer isn't necessary. You gotta find what works for you.

So I can only fill my jars up half way?

I'm using 1/2 pints for my first run, and planned to use dry verm as an air filter in place of your tyvek.

Could I just use coffee filters?

My personal times: WBS: 12 hour soak, 20 min simmer. Rye: 24 hour soak, 30 min simmer. It works great for me, but might not work for you.

o0brandnewcolony those are PolyFill lids covered w/ coffee filters on top, and no you can't use coffee filters alone. Make yourself some good filter tops here.

Since I've been draining so long, what could be causing the grains to stay so wet?

I rinsed off most of the slimy covering, should they look this wet before pc'ing?

for popcorn or wbs there should be a small ring of water around each kernal that is pressed up against the side of the glass

Also, since Diver said to shake them up, and I can't do that if I'm using dry verm as a filter, what should I do?

Go to quart jars, hard to get anything accomplished w/ grains using 1/2 pinters.
