Casing Questions
    #3994078 - 03/31/05 10:06 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm doing my first casing during the next couple of days (corn tek). I had a couple of questions. What are the advantages of coco coir over peat moss in casing mix? Also is it ok to use the same mix for your bottom layer as your top casing layer? What is the advantage of peroxide in the misting water? Lastly - I've seen some different info about thickness of the various layers - any advice?

big thanks

bk

Hey What's up? Advantage of coir over peat might be ease. If you use coir you won't have to sift out the larger pieces or buffer the ph of your casing mix.

Yes, you can use your casing mix for your bottom layer. A lot of people just use straight pasteurized vemiculite.

Substrate layer, anywhere from 1"-3". 2"-3", however, I believe is optimal. Your casing layer is usually between 1/4"-1/2". Can be 3/4" if you have a 3" substrate layer.
Hope this helps you out.
Good Luck.

however thick your substrate layer is, make your casing 1/4 the depth of that.

hydrogen peroxide is usually used in a 1:10 ratio when misting to ensure sterility of the water; i reccomend it.

Have fun
