I followed the Strainsaver Tek www.shroomery.org/index/par/7956 I bought some oyster mushrooms at the grocery store. I dropped a chuck of the fresh mushroom into the aspen shavings and incubated. Within 3 days, the mycelium were really taking off. The low nutrients in the wood shavings keeps mold and other life from taking over. A good technique for both saving strains and cloning.

Very neat! I will try that too. Do you guys think it will work with an agar wedge too?

Yes. Although I am not so sure about the "anti-contamination" aspect. Anything can contaminate, given the right conditions...

Very nice. I was at Trader Joe's yesterday and figured there was a way to do this (and figured I'd already read about it and forgotten) but was thinking about buying some of the fresh shrooms there to see if I could get more started, but I am really strapped for cash, so this goes in my stash of things to try sometime

Here is my first cloned mushroom, thanks to the Strainsaver tek. It is an oyster that I bought at the grocery store. I wasn't planning to fruit on this substrate, but it started pinning before I realized it. It is growing on malt agar with peroxide and aspen chips added. I didn't have a petri dish at the time, so I just poured the agar into a plastic cup covered by a plastic sandwich bag. This was done in my kitchen without any glove box or other sterile things. The mycelium came straight from the jar of aspen chip as described in the Strainsaver tek. -Mark
