Heating pad dried out bottom of jars a little
    #3992591 - 03/30/05 09:20 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I figured out why jars innoc'ed on the 4th of march are still not even 70% colonized...

my heating pad has dried out the bottom of the jars.. i took one out to see what was wrong and the bottom was hard and dry..

will these colonize if the temps lower?? or will I have to just take off the dried part when birthing??

Or would a dunk work after the jar is as colonized as it could get with just about a half an inch or so of dryness on the bottom?

are they stalled? im guessing BRF 70% in a month isn't to bad hell sometimes it takes my foaf 2 weeks plus before he starts to see signs of growth with the BRF. It took my foaf his first time 2 months before it was completely colonized.

Perfect example why colonized jars of any sort should not come into direct contact with a heating pad. Always use a grate or spacer of some sort to seperate the two. Temps should be ambiant around jars.

go to your local garden store
ask for hydraform(SP)
put it over heat pad
put jars on hydraform

well i took one jar as a test .. and did the following:

sterilized casing container with alcohol.
created positive airflow with toaster oven set to 180degrees F.
sterilized vermiculite.

I sprayed the air around me with an anti-bacterial airspray.
laid one layer of vermiculite down in the casing container, opened the jar and quickly took off the dried out part.. crumbled colonized part of the cake onto the bottom layer, then added another layer of verm. Two layers of saran wrap were lightly placed over this and into the incubator it goes.

See anything wrong with this procedure?? the cake was completely colonized minus the dry part.

Wish me luck! oh and btw I made my first liquid culture today with EQ
