Newbie - dunk and casing - Birthing
    #3992908 - 03/30/05 10:43 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Should I dunk my cakes before casing? As I understand the purpose of dunking is rehydration. My cakes moisture level seems to be pretty good. But the cold temp helps to promote pinning, right? So should I still proceed w/ the dunk tek to help speed the process along?

honestly i like to keep things as simple as possible for less chance of screwing it up or some contam getting involved ;p.

dunking is really not necessary with casings as the casing layer should be sufficient for all your hydration needs.

As for coldshocking.. you want to do this just before fruiting. As soon as you create your casings, youre still not ready to fruit. You have to let the freshly made casings incubate for 2-3more days to let the mycelium recover. You'll know youre ready to fruit once you begin to see myc poking through the surface. Once this occurs, you should patch a little bit by covering the exposed myc with some extra casing layer. Now is when you may want to cold-shock or not. You could just stick it in the fridge for a couple hours, or open your window in ur room and let the temps drop to the 40-50s like i did.. either way, coldshocking isnt that vital...

goodluck

edit: of course you'd want to keep it covered while fridging if thats what you decide to do  forgot that bit

Just to be sure i understand, casing's purpose is to provide nutrients, so once my cake is crumbled and recuperated if there is any myc that's exposed I should sprinkle/patch my vermiculite & coir mix onto exposed myc?

Actually a casing's purpose is to provide moisture not nutrients.

Ok, so do I just sprinkle casing over myc to keep hydrated? And what is my myc using to grow if not casing?
