COOLER dunking????
    #3992892 - 03/31/05 12:39 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm starting my first grow soon and really want to dunk bcause ive heard good things for increasing yield. the only prob is im growing in a place where i wont be able to use the fridge to put the dunked cakes in. Is it neccisary to cold dunk? If so will a cooler filled with ice do?

humm

I would say leaving it in a cooler with ice for the night would work... You should test the temp to make sure the cooler isnt too cold though, prolly put it up on on stands or something so its not getting direct contact with the ice.. This isnt freezer dunking.... haha.

the basic principle is that the temp drops to fridge temps for a day or so.

A cooler will work just fine. There is no need to cold shock cubensis at all. It is a tropical species that fruits in warm weather. Cold shocking is for the cold weather fungi, that need it to know it's time to fruit. The reason we dunk in the refrigerator is to keep bacteria from growing on our cakes or casings during the dunk. Bacterial colonies will double in size every two hours or so if left in room temperature water.

Hmmm dude, you sure about that? Temp, O2, and Light are the seasonal triggers for Mushies to stop the Veg state, and enter the fruiting phase, I don't think it matters if they are tropical, or not. Cold shocking just seems logical to initiate the Fruiting cycle, don't think it really has mush to do with Bacteria, as they would most likely survive the dunk & shock with no problems..

cold shocking is a drop of 10 degrees or more. 10 degrees is fine. If you colonize at 82 degrees and dunk at 72 degrees (RT for me) that is plenty of temperature change. Fridge dunking is overkill and i dont belive it makes the cakes do any better then a RT dunk.

I would just wait until you weren't living with your parents to do it...

If you cold shock more than 10F, all you'll noticed is a delayed pinset IME...Gl

Sorry friend, but cubensis fruits all season. It does not wait for cold weather. Folks in Texas and Florida are picking them now. This is spring, not fall. The purpose for dunking in the refrigerator is as stated, to keep bacteria under control during the dunk. The bacteria survive the dunk, but they don't double their colony size every two hours, because the refrigerator protects the cake, just as it protects your food from rotting due to bacteria.

Cubensis fruits very well in the 70F-80F degree range. I colonize all jars at room temperature, then keep at room temperature for the flushing cycle. There is no reduction of temperature at any time in any of my grows(edibles excluded)prior to first flush. I do dunk casings in the refrigerator after first flush, but as stated above, this is not cold shocking. I hope this has helped to clear up some of the misunderstanding.

Thanks for the help. I'm not living w/ my parents or anything i'm a big boy now. but my roomates wouldnt take too kindly to me putting cakes in the fridge. It would make it look like they have knowledge of my operation. I'm going to dunk in a cooler filled w/ ice. I'll but a therm. in there to see if its too cold. But how cold is too cold??

I'm pretty sure it was just recommended to not put them in the cooler. I could be wrong though

No need for a thermometer. Ice water will be 32 and will work great. Just have it clean and make sure they're completely under water. I also like to wash under a faucet both before and after the dunk. This helps to remove any contaminants that may be present.
