i have no first hand exp.
????????????????????
but i found this 'recipe' and info @ S.A.B
It's one of the traditional methods, and sounds really appealing to me.
Did you add lime?

Quote:
...Generally the the betel-quid is a small morsel consisting of a quarter betel seed (cushed), a pinch of lime, spices like cardamom or nutmeg for flavour all wrapped in a betel leaf (Piper betle). On some Pacific Islands it is traditional for the men to also add tobacco into the package. This quid is chewed slowly over several hours, causing mild stimulation and a feeling of well being.

Quote:
In India and throughout much of Asia betel nuts are peeled, dried and often undergo a pickling process. They are then distributed in the markets and consumed as desired. The dry nuts are extremely hard and are processed by cracking, slicing or shredding. Cracked nuts ('supari') are often ground to a fine powder just before consumption in a chewing quid. Sliced nuts are chewed as they are. Shredded nuts are added to tobacco to make 'gutkha', or to fennel seeds to make 'paan masala'. On the island around Australia Betel nuts are usually consumed fresh (straight out of the shell) with a little lime added to the mouth by dipping a moistened Piper sarmentosum flower into the lime container and then chewing it together with the nut.

- i don't have any info on A. calamus

personally i wouldn't do calamus tea as its very very bitter and a high grade extract will burn forever... I have not tried this but perhaps taking the calamus extract (ethanol) as a shot would be the fastest way to ingest. I liked the effects a lot stimulating yet psychedilic and the world felt wavy.

I normally get Pan from some indian guys in a city near me. They got a booth and give me "sweet pans" for a buck a piece, it's betel nuts, fennel, licorice candies, some sort of honey or whatever on it and other stuff wrapped up.

I also like Supari which is like pan without the betel leaf wrap and other shit, it's just betel nuts (reall kola nuts) with rose on them, it's very tasty.

reall = really

There's no such thing as a Betel Nut, Piper Betel is a vine and that's the leaf that's used in the Paan preparation. The betel nut, Areca catechu, is sometimes called by a "synonym" Kola/Cola Nut which is also the name of the nut produced by the tree from africa Cola acuminata, when talking to the indian guys at the Paan places they've used both but I know Cola acuminata isn't used in Paan preparations. Far as I can tell in talking with people at those booths that make/sell them, it's often switched interchangably, though incorrectly. But I could be wrong cause I can't really understand those guys all that well.

Depends on ingredients/ingestion- I find them stimulating to the point of addiction- though ciggs are far more habitually binding by nature. Very tasty.....indeed.....Makes for a good brown bling on your front teeth.

i've never used betel nut, but it's use has been associated with oral cancers, so if you use it, please do be aware of that. it's the high copper content in the nut that is believed to be carcinogenic.

as for acorus calamus, i've tried dried root, but not fresh root.  it worked as a very mild stimulant for me.  i made tea of it, NASTY stuff!!!!!! :frown:  as for "claims" of it being psychedelic--that was *not* my experience, but that wasn't what i was hoping for when i tried it either.  i was *hoping* it would be a good stimulant, similar to ephedra, but legal.  i was also told that it would help tooth pain.  didn't help my tooth much, but picked my mood/energy level up a bit.  my 2 cents?  strong coffee or a couple mountain dews and chocolate bars tastes a whole lot better!  :smile:
