I don't know much, but after many hours here and some stubborn eq cakes that are doing nothing, I have found out that eq's can be hard to get pinning. I received several suggestions to cold shock them before birth. Don't know squat about mexi-cubs, though.

They are not hard to get to pin if you case them. I have never tried growing ecuadors from cakes, but I had no trouble getting pins when I cased them. Make sure your temp is within fruting range 74-78 and fan them. I' have never done well with cakes. So, I had to case everything. I hear good things about mexi cubs. Ecuadors are my personal favorite, but I haven't tried mexi cubs yet.

isis, do you cold shock your casings? I have no experience, but I do intend to try casing with half of my next batch. If I can't get these eq's to fruit, then I plan on getting another eq syringe and starting over. I refuse to let a fungus win. I know you are experienced, but what do you recommend for a first-time casing? Oops, hope I didn't change the direction of this thread.....

Well, I don't really cold shock as most people describe it. I let them grow at 80+ while colonizing then I drop the temp to fruiting range when I initiate fruiting. So, they go from 80+ to 75-76. That's worked for me thus far. I know one time I kept the temp at about 78, and the ecuadors would not start to pin till I dropped the temp to 75. When most people talk about cold shocking they mean putting the cakes in the fridge over night or something like that. You have to rememeber that most of the time it's several degrees warmer in your chamber. My cakes never wanted to pin either so I had to start casing right away.If you can't get these cakes to fruit crumble them up and create a nice casing.Casing is easy. I started with 50/50 casing material and have continue to use it. It works well. You can also use straight vermiculite, but I find l get nicer flushes with 50/50. Look in the grow section. There are a few easy casing teks there. The most important thing to remember with casings is that they don't need the high humidity that cakes require. How long have you been trying to get these cakes to fruit? I have to go back and read the thread. Are you fanning? What's your temp?

Mexi-cubs are alot more visual IMO than EQ's. EQ's tend to hit hard physically with alot of tension in hard hitting waves. Mexi-cups seem more mild physically but pack a tremendous visual trip. Both are easy to pinn givin the right elements. Mexi-cubs love wheat straw, EQ's love almost anything. But both grow on any variety of substrates and casings. What are the details of your set-up(temp, humidity.etc)
