coffe filters
    #399214 - 09/20/01 02:32 PM (22 years, 6 days ago)

I used two sterlised coffe filters instead of lid in a PF tek. No contaims and the mycillem is spreading quick. I guess there is something to the air exchange in jars.

Well from what I've read that isnt the best idea...I mean you might as well not even put a lid on the jars. I think the only thing that the coffee filters are going to keep out of your jars are larger airborne contams. You might as well just shell out 5 dollars and buy some filter discs from MicronMagick...they are resuable and filter 99.97% of airbone contams down to .3 microns

Yah coffee filters are meant to keep the coffee grinds from dripping into the water, not filter out airborne contaminants. I dont even think a coffee filter could filter down to 1 micron, much less .3.

A micron is 1 millionth of a meter wide. Dust particles can get very small so I would assume it would keep some things out, but bacteria != dust. A verm seal with 4 holes in the jar lids would provide air exchange and keep out more bacteria than this method.

Agreed, Coffee filters will keep larger particles from tumbling into your jar, but the top layer of verm is what is really shielding your sub....Mycron magic is the best way to go.and the price is right!

Just a correction here, when you talk about microns in decimals then a micron is represented thus 1 micron = 0,001
2 micron = 0,002
3 microns =0,003
saying 0,3 is 3 microns is incorrect and misleading 0,3 is a third of a millimetreor 300 microns , 0,003 is three thousands of a millimetre,
big difference.
This how I see it but,
This how it appears in stamets book and its confusing to me

Are these filters 300 microns or 3 microns ?

Actually, if a micron is 1/1000000, then 1 micron=.000001 meters(just do the math:one divided by a million!) Micro=10 to the minus six, so I assume a micron is 1/1000000.

From dictionary.com

mi?cron also mi?kron (mkrn)
n. pl. mi?crons or mi?cra (-kr) also mi?krons or mi?kra (-kr)
