What the hell?

Some guy I know is casing his cakes for the first time. He used those aluminum baking trays you buy at the grocery store. He has noticed some odd looking white/orange fuz growing up the sides of the tray. It almost looks like mycelium, however the mycelium should be 3/4 an inch under the soil still. He can't seem to tell if it's a combination of rust and mold or just something odd with the route the mycelium choose to grow. As far as he knows, aluminum will not rust or mold (especially after it was sterilized). Any idea what the hell that is?

It will grow faster on the edges (more air). But the orange poses a problem. If it does contam cut that section out and try to save the rest.

HQ's didnt rust when she used aluminum disposable baking pans. im guessing its a rusty colour then... how thick of a casing layer did you use? sounds kinda thick. what kind of casing material? coir sometimes has this orangy tint to it; if youre using coir- are you sure its not a color of the coir? havent heard of an orange contam, you may want to post in the contam forum to see if anyone has heard of it.

After further inspection I think the orange color is coming from fragments of the soil. I think it's actually light brown. However, the white fuz on the edges of the foil pan is quite hard. I scraped some of it off and it had a powder like feeling to it? His casing layer was made with equal parts vermiculite and peat moss with a bit of hydrated lime and crushed oyster shell for calcium. One mushroom has jumped out of the corner. It's short and fat. The cap looks good. My friend was told to watch out for black cap mushrooms. Hopefully the rest of the mushrooms will find the air soon. As far as I know, no pinning has occoured. The casing looks exactly the same as when it was first placed on the cakes.
