Long hair
    #3989621 - 03/30/05 10:06 AM (19 years, 3 days ago)

How many of us have long hair. Ive got hair down to my shoulders and Iam constantly thought of by everyone as some kind of drug addict or hippie. If you do have long hair does it get you stereotyped as someone with drugs or someone that the cops immidiately expect for having stuff on you?

Yes, mines more than halfway down my back. Since I moved to this little WV town, I was marked as a druggie...It pisses me off. No problems with the cops yet though. But all the Biblethumping God-folk think I moved from CA to be a bad influence...I actually heard it said. Makes it hard to get work, hence the shrooms!

I'm growing my hair out again. I used to have it a little past my shoulders. Never really had any trouble with the cops, but people always look at me weird and assume I am a "druggie". Fuck them, they don't even know me. All they know is I'm young, I have two piercings, and long hair and from there they think they have all the knowledge in the world to come to a conclusion. People like that make me sick.

I got my hair cut. When I had long hair, most people regarded me as a druggie (and a hippie). Now that it's cut and I have more of a conservative look, no one suspects me of drug use. Appearance is everything. If you look like a druggie, people will regard you as one no matter what (even if you aren't).

Yo. Some of my friends and I have long hair, and sometimes are regarded as hippies/druggies possibly because of it...But seriously now...obviously, many of us actually ARE hippies/druggies, so who cares?

Cant say I ever notice anyone stare, but my hair gets me labeled. That is pretty annoying.

Although, on Easter I was followed by a Kansas State Sheriff for about 2 miles. I was doing about 5 over, he probably just ran my plates.

Yeah, I've got long hair too. Probably only one of two in my town that do--not uncommon in the South. Its fucked up and hard when police are around, you're shopping, you're applying for a job, the list goes on and on. I say fuck it though...people are so ignorant and judgemental in general I kind of enjoy getting them riled up. I do carry protection if any country boys try anything, I learned that when two employees at a store yelled at me and cursed me outside the store door, I told their manager, and she didn't do shit.

People don't give a fuck about you if you are not in their category of "acceptability".

It shouldn't mater how you look, but with the prejudice of the world it's the way it is, were labeled before people even meet us, and in a sense, discriminated for it.

Yep, I got myself some shoulder length curly hair. Yep, people do call me a druggie. Every other chap that I know with long hair does a lot of drugs. Women grudgingly love my hair though; they say they wish they had hair like mine. And whats more, I dont even dump all that shit into my hair that women do to make it look good.

Although I wouldn't label myself a "druggie," I do take drugs and drugs (the ones I take) are illegal, and for that fact, I don't necessarily want to advertise it.  When a cop pulls me over, I would rather have him thinking "that kid's hair is a little too short" rather than "god damn druggie."  Short hair is also a lot easier to maintain than long hair, and summer days aren't nearly as hot.  The ladies did love my hair though, that's my only regret for cutting it :frown:

i did have long hair.
it wasn't cut for security measures, but of course it has added benefits.

the great thing about assumptions is:
they are predictable

because these stereotypes conform to a certain standard, you can be sure what someone is going to think when they see something.
then, you can act accordingly.

Stereotypes exist because most of the time they are true.

I'd say a very large percent of people (guys) with long hair smoke weed. For every stereotype, there will obviously be an exception. But as far as they go, for the most part, they are accurate.

True.. but for every guy I know with long hair that smokes weed.. I can think of ten others with short hair that do the same. It's just the fucking stereotypes of society... probably leftover resentment of the hippies from the 60s. Up until 200 years ago it was cool to have long hair. Politicians wore big ass wigs. Jesus had long hair. Now it makes you a druggie.

I say fuck society and the horse it rode in on.. but that attitude doesn't get you very far with it.

We both have long dreads...not not twista head pretenda dreads. I can not even guess how long my hair is. Took 3 1/2 years to dread and another. Our 3 year old son has never had his hair cut either. Alot of people assume he is a girl...and he fires back..IM A BOY! Whenever some one calls him a girl. His hair is really long and he has about 5 natural nattys already started in the back. I think we get more looks because of him than us.

I dreaded my hair about a month ago and it was about 18 inches long when I did it. Before it was dreaded I would wear it back in a ponytail 95% of the time and I dress pretty nice alot of the time so I didn't get too many looks. I live in a college town and long hair is pretty normal.

The dreads are a different story though. I do get alot of looks but alot of the time its from people my age and they seem more interested than assuming. When older folk give me looks I just stare them down until they look away. I would have to say the worst is going into like a Hobby Lobby or Lowes for growing supplies where i really look out of place. Even then I've noticed if you dress nice, carry yourself like you're straight up, and act polite people really wont bother you much. I havent yet had a run in with the 5-0 while I've had the dreads but once again if the hair is the only suspicious thing appearance wise they probably won't bother with you.

Wow its the opposite for me,I used to shave my head and all the cops thought I was a gang banger not only would I get pulled over constantly but would nearly always get searched too, since I have grown my hair out I haven't even been asked by cops if they can search my car, they just pull me over and either give me a warning or a ticket if I'm speeding or something and than leave.when I had my head shaved it was constant harassment

I'm currently letting my hair grow back out. I'm 52. Its just a couple of inch's past my ears right now. So far only my daughter has said any thing about it. She can't stand it. Tells me "how an I going to explain to your granddaughter why you look like a girl". I don't know and don't care. My granddaughter and I will have the same length hair.

Why do you guys grow your hair long?

It seems like an extra hassle to me. So I assume you do it because you like the way it looks. You're doing it to look different, make a statement, or identify with the counterculture. So why bitch when people pick up on that and treat you how they think someone like that should be treated?

If you want people to think you're straight then you gotta look straight. That's NEVER going to change. If you don't wear a tie you won't fit in at the office, it's the same thing. If you don't conform to societal norms then you're going to be perceived as a rebel or counterculture person.

You're doing something that makes you stand out and look different or strange and then bitching when people don't treat you like an average Joe.

I think you're reading too much into things also. They immediately notice that you're different, that's because you are, but that doesn't mean they're going to treat you like shit or anything.

I'd also bet than 90% of the reactions aren't because of your long hair, it's probably more the way you dress, act, or even smell. I got no problem with long-hairs or even freaks, but I wouldn't hire them for a straight-laced job. OTOH if I owned a record or porn store I'd ask right on the application how many tats and piercings you had, and only hire the freaks.

I know plenty of long-hairs that look 100% respectable. I highly doubt that they get any shit. So comb your hair, take a shower, put some highzine in your eyes, put on some normal clothes and people will treat you like you're normal no matter how long your hair is. The same goes for short haired people too.

Another thing I would point out is that you guys ARE druggies and hippies. Don't be surprised that people pick up on this, especially when you make zero effort to fit in.

-FF

P.S. Don't take this as a rip, I love the counterculture, hippies, and long-hairs they're some of my best friends and good people. Just don't expect to fit in when you make an effort to stand out.

i could never understand the point of having long hair. it's a hassle, i don't think it looks good, and these days it's not really making a statement.

i keep my hair pretty short. #2 buzz. i don't have to pay for haircuts, it's much cleaner, and dries in about 5 minutes.

another benefit is that cops and conservatives don't give me a second look, and i like it that way. when i could grow, i'd happily tell the checkout lady at walmart about my parakeets and canning hobby.

My hair was long not for a statement, but because I really didn't care.

I keep my hair shorter now, but I'm sure I'll get lazy about it again. I work out everyday and have good hygiene, I just don't give a fuck about my hair length, I never really have.

I got shit because I live in a very rural, conservative, small town where prejudice and fear rule. An actual quote from a former sheriff is "Hippies just like to kill and see blood."

I didn't stink, work/drive/go to class stoned, have lice in my hair, or wear anything glaringly outside of the t-shirt and jeans model. I was completely drug free for many periods of time with long hair and still got shit.

I work in the professional realm and got a lot of "compliments" when I cut my hair from people that gave me shit...things like that help you get a better perspective of the people around you and what they value in a person.

BTW, this post is old.

Nice old thread revival here..

Anywho.. my hair is more than halfway down my back, I haven't had a haircut in 9 years.

I absolutly hate getting my hair cut, I was tramatized as a kid with one of them "bad haircuts" and never wanted my hair cut again.
Silly, I know, but that's how it goes.

Noone seems to look at me anny different, unless my back is to them. At work I constantly get called "Maam" or "Miss"

I had some lady probably 5-10 years older than me, walking up to me not 20' from me, adjusting her brazier, shimmy shaking around, she gets to 10' from me, looking directly at me the whole time, and she goes "Oh shit, I thought you were a girl" I just said, "Nope, I was just going to ask if I could help you with anything."

I should mention I have a blonde mustache, and blonde chinhair that's probably 2" long.

I just don't get why people constantly assume long hair = female.
I can deal with long hair = druggie, and all the others, I just don't get the sexual orientation thing...

Although mine isnt THAT long, its still pretty damn long, it sits nicely on the tops of my shoulders. In a court hearing, after telling the judge that i would fail a drug test (nothing prior would have made her suspect me, it was a non-drug related offense, and i have no drug priors) she said "thats what I thought".

I have had a ponytail of various lengths for the past 21 years. As a chef, I only was asked to cut my hair once, and I got up from the interview and laughed at them.
I've tucked it up, worn a hair net, played the part. But as soon as the day is over...
People used to " assess " me, thinking this or that. But I've always been able to win them over with a smile or kind word.
As I got older, I just don't give-a-shit about other people. They give me some kind of look, and I shine them on. Luckily I live in a long-haired, weed-smokin',dreadlock hanging place. And they are the kindest people!! Fuck everyone else!!
Unfortunately, I now look like Dharma's dad!!
Peace

PS. Fuck paying $10 for a haircut every week. THAT's a hassle.
And I don't have long hair to make a statement. I do it because that's what it naturally does. Also, you cannot headbang properly with a shaved head. :smirk:

I shaved my head last year so I wouldn't "look like a hippie" while growing shrooms in an apt building. I've regretted it ever since, in spite of the feeling of lessened paranoia! And I'm glad my hair is finally getting on back down past my collar again! WHEW!

Never again dammit!

i look very "aryan". blonde hair and blue eyes. i'm told i look militant (and i do). having short hair, i get a bit of the opposite than long hair. i know there are people that assume from the way i look that i'm a racist or am somehow dangerous. most cops around here look about the same though, so it's fine as far as that goes. still, i've been told that, for whatever reason, i am the sort of person who looks like he's "up to something".

Never admit to anything! Don't even admit to not admitting.

It's perfectly acceptable to simply say nothing at any point during police/court interaction. Just remain silent or say "I stand mute." Always remember your 5th amendment right against self incrimination.

Hell no, I was trying to avoid a longer sentence. This was the type of bitch that would have SLAMMED me if i pulled some "I stand mute" type of bullshit. I understand exercising rights against police and all, but this is the type of judge where you have to play it straight or she will punish you to the full extent of her power, which in my case, was a lot.

Long hair, only about 4-6 inches away from hitting crack now...

Do I get thought of as a drug user? Sometimes... At the same time though I really don't look like someone who wants to start trouble or anything and people will generally leave me alone...

No way. You don't understand legal psychology. She didn't think you were playing it straight or being truthfull. She thought "What an idiot, he just confessed to a crime he wasn't even charged with!"

A judge will never fuck with you for remaining silent. That's miscoduct and they get shitcanned for that kind of stuff.

ive been growing out my dreads for a while now, and have had long hair for many years. people area always gonna look at you wierd,(especially with dreads) but i find it is usually because they are curiouse, not nessesarilly because they think less of you. when i find someone staring at me i smile and mabey wave as opposed to trying to stare them down. doing this makes people feel more at ease, and often gives me a chance to talk to them or answer any quesions about my dreads. (yes, i can and do wash them )

I don't have straight hair it's really wavey so that makes it difficult. >:o

My hair is nearly down to my arse at the moment and I've been growing it for nearly 10 years. I also started growing a beard last year, so yeah, I've been getting a few more stares than usual.
I don't get too much shit about it, but it depends what part of the country/town I'm in. Older and more conservative people are more intimidated by it, most people are just intrigued. I certainly notice when travelling through hick towns that I get very cold reactions when being served at a shop. But since I live in the biggest city in the country, countercultures and "freaks" aren't that out of place here.

It is harder to get jobs (it's hard enough getting jobs when you're deaf), but I'd rather prove to people that I'm nice, regardless of my appearance, than just get my hair cut off. It's quite satisfying proving people wrong when they judge you on your appearance! For example, I work in an office (that's right) for an engineering firm. I don't tie my hair up, but I keep my septum piercing out during the workday. I wear a nice shirt and nice pants, but that's as far as I go for looking "respectable".

On the flipside, when you look like a druggy, then it's a bit easier to mingle with the drug crowd. No one second guesses me when they see me! Cops barely even hassle me, because I don't act nervous around them.

It's not hard to keep clean - shampoo every 2nd day, brush in the morning before shower. That's it. And maybe a trim every month or so. Not difficult at all. Not to mention it keeps me warmer in winter!

Screw getting a haircut JUST to conform and fit in. People shouldn't get haircuts just to fit in, same as people shouldn't grow their hair long, dress a certain way or act a certain way to fit in. People should do what they want, and feel comfortable doing. People will actually respect more in the long run for sticking to what you believe in, rather than pandering to the masses.

I used to wear my hair long, and trust me, as stated above, APPEARANCE is everything. Let it go, try to be "non-descript". That is a term your enemy uses for people who aren't suspects. Just bite the bullet, and cut it. Or wait until you get hemmed up and have a case of CDS or something. I know it is a bullshit deal, but cops are getting more power every day.
Don't be a victim of our police state. Keeping your hair short and neat will only help you blend in and make it harder for the enemy to detect your presence. Or, as I said above, just keep on trucking until you realize that it is 100% true, you are judged 100% by your appearance, no doubt about it.

So good luck to all the long hairds. I wish you only the best.

"Don't be a victim of our police state. Keeping your hair short and neat will only help you blend in and make it harder for the enemy to detect your presence".

Feeling like I have to cut my hair would make me a victim without ever getting busted...

Its really not so bad. I expect to be busted if Im asking for it.
DOnt be an idiot and long hair will not be an issue. If you are toting some weed around in your car and you have long hair, you best put it in a tail and maybe even tuck it into your shirt.
If you like having long hair or are attached to your long hair, there is no reason to cut it off unless you are mister drug toting idiot. You dont need to have some logic behind having long hair. For some people its an unintentional but poignant statement about yourself. Much like people with beards......You could even just be one very lazy guy.
People will be looking at you differently, and if you are looking for the right job for yourself or some shit, go ahead and cut it.
I really wouldnt be too worried about the ridiculous perceptions of so very many inconsequential people though.
I know one thing is for sure, being a guy with long hair and a beard. If someone really cares that much about how I "dont look like everyone else", then I really dont care what they think.
Most people actually have a positive reaction to such an out of style, style-less, culture-questionable hair style.

Funny story: I actually was just out to eat with some friends and was going to the bathroom when I accidentally kicked the chair next to some couple that was eating. He was a young hip little guy (about 23-24 years old), and looked at me like I just ruined his night. I said I was "sorry about that".... What I should have said is, "I dont say sorry to snotty little undergrads like yourself".
I came back to my table and within one minute I looked at him and he was looking right back. I then, said to my friends, "wow, some people really need to grow up"(and a few other not threatening observations about how pissed off I had just made this guy). I then looked back at him knowing that he had heard me for the most part and he was there to meet me for the stare. I honestly just laughed my ass off for a second or two and put my beer up to my lips and took a drink.

If I had been anyone else, there likely wouldnt have been a problem with a simple accident like the one that had just occured in that restaurant. Hell, if he had given some well-dressed middle aged drunk guy that disgusted look, he could easily have gotten a personal invite to come outside.
----------------------------------------------------------

Ya, and some girls really are intrigued or turned on by dudes with long hair, some dudes too im sure. Why? Well for one, its probably a good sign that we are not your average joe(or on the other hand it could mean we are a normal hipster trying to make some fashion statement/trying to be cool etc.). Why even read into it though???
Its just hair.

I wont be "biting the bullet" any time soon. I like my hair, people shouldnt care about my hair, and even when they do I dont feel threatened by their reactions.

I honestly think I will have long hair for a very long time. Its already been 12 years. I wont change it for any reason under the sun unless it actually involves what I consider to be my well being.

i agree with blending in the crowd... no one would even suspect me of doing any drugs! plain and simple,

keep everything locked up inside me... fit the model citizen profile, and you will most likely not have anything to worry about.

I have dreadlocks down past my waist, and I have never, not once, been arrested, searched or even questioned by a police officer.

To people who say that you should cut your hair to fit into the model of Joe Shmoe alcoholic because it will bring me less trouble, I say that maybe they should lay off the reefer a bit. They're starting to get a bit paranoid.

Sure people may stare for a second too long, and the occasional asshole has a bad reaction, but hey at least you can tell they're assholes right from the first meeting and, ergo, their opinion is invalid and not worth your time.

Body language is the real communicator. Talk to an officer like you would talk to a (non druggie) friend. I think you'll find that most of them are in their position because they're nice people who just want to help those around them, not because they're tyrannical sadists.

I get far more odd looks when I dress up a bit than when I'm slumming it in my jeans and tee shirt, and I would never give up my long hair. I had short hair once. It was horrible. I haven't cut it since.

Those are some long-ass dreads my friend.

I like how you said ---> "Body language is the real communicator. Talk to an officer like you would talk to a (non druggie) friend. I think you'll find that most of them are in their position because they're nice people who just want to help those around them, not because they're tyrannical sadists".

Its sad how many people just hate all cops, with a passion.
Its worse when they say they look like joe shmo because they hate cops. I think it goes a bit deeper than that though.

Anyways, long hair......some people just like it. No good reason to just bend over and take it from some shmuck.

i got rather long dreads, as said before ""Body language is the real communicator" is very true.
if you talk to the coppers nice and educated, even they differentiate between a
"wrecked dirty druggy hippy" and "dreads - but somehow normal"

however you do get stigmatized somehow, sadly.
