Couple casing questions regarding excessive moisture and casing tins.
    #3987995 - 03/29/05 10:17 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

First question is about moisture. Mycelium has spread through the top layer(using 50/50+) on one of my casings, but the upper layer is too moist or my humidity is too high. Water droplets were covering the mycelium layer, so I have made a point to try and fan it as often as possible. Some of the mycelium now looks matted but I do not see many water droplets now. Is there anything I should do with the casing now? Will the matted mycelium be ok?

My next question is regarding a casing tin. I have a 10 X 18 aluminum tin with a plastic lid. The lid is pretty tall, but not tall enough for a full grown mushroom. Could I just incubate a casing in such a tin, then birth it with the lid still on?

I thought maybe this would help assure a humid growing condition for the early stages. I know for this to work I would need to remove the lid several times a day and fan it. And obviously I would need to remove the lid and place in a terrarium once the mushrooms reached a certain height. Any input would be appreciated.

Thx in advance!

scratch the casing, it was too dry and it overlayed then you let moisture build up

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

just leave the lid on your casing while its incubating, then take it off when its time to fruit.

Is scratching safe?

I have heard that it can be more harmful than good, but I am not certain.
