Contams in the wild
    #3988460 - 03/30/05 02:05 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have a question bout contams.
When we make our cakes, everything must be complety sterile so nothing is contaminated.
But in the wild, shrooms grow in a very NON sterile enviroment, so how come all the shrooms that grow in the wild arnt contaminated?

When a spore print is taken from the wild, its taken as clean as the picker can. Then its streaked onto some agar and allowed to grow out until signs of contamination show.

Then you cut the best looking small square piece farthest away from the contams and stick the square in a fresh agar dish.

Repeat process until a Pure Culture is achieved.

Pretty much same thing when cloning a wild mushroom.

What I'm trying to say is, when mushies are grown in doors say from a rice/vermiculite cake, if the medium the mycelium is trying to grow on is open up to air chances are some particle will land on it and contaminate the mycelium, thats why so much effort is put around sterilization correct.

Now in the wild, when the mushies are growing in some forest the mycelium and shrooms have constant exposure to the surroundings, so then wouldn't every mushie that's growing outside now be contaminated? So how come when people go mushy hunting in the wild, they don't get sick from eating contaminated shrooms?

What makes shrooms in the wild not get contaminated while when they are tried to be grown indoors a breath out of place will contaminate them?

what it is:
years of natural selection have allowed cubensis to thrive amongst all of the bacteria in the bovine dung. however, if you were to sterilize this, the mycelia would not be able to compete w/ all of the other contaminants outside of it's natural environment.

hope this answers your question.

- indoors you prepare a very special medium, which is full of nutrients , so every kind of shroom grow on this medium very fast.
and mold (bacteria, etc.) grow much faster then our mycel.

in nature all those living exists in a equilibrium. when cubensis get control some place other species die, just as in reverse.

in nature exists no contaminations, ...
all kind of life got his owns place. even mold ^^ .. they are very important.

In the wild, cubensis is the contamination.

The point you are missing is that the neither the mushrooms nor the mycelium get contaminated, it is the substrate they grow on that gets contaminated.

When you grow inside you are providing a nutrient rich substance that favors almost all fungal/microbial growth. We are hoping that a massive spore injection or the addition of live myc will grow faster than any contams.

Outside shrooms grow all over the place, but there are even more places they don't grow. When a shroom pops up it means at that place the conditions favored the mushroom.
