misting question

my cakes are pretty dry. humidity is fine though. i don't want to use the straw technique for fear of contamination. by the way, is this fear justified? so what i have been doing for a few days now is misting the sides of the rubbermaid, the top, and even the cakes. now so far this is working fine because since i readjusted the humidity and started misting, pins have set and are starting to grow. slowly though, because as i explained the cakes dried out. so in lieu of a re-dunking, can i continue the misting until my first flush? the pins are still all less then 1/2" but growly very slowly and steadily though.

You don't want to mist a cake directly, unless you have a layer of dry verm. Did you roll it in verm after that initial dunk? If so, just sit tight and keep up humidity/fanning. You already have pins, so it sounds like you have things under control.

yes i completely rolled it in verm before i put them in the fruiting pod. but my concern is that they are growing so slowly, about 4 days now and all are very small, almost like about 12-24 hours worth, compared to some of the grow logs i have reviewed. so you think the cakes should not still be misted? any comments about the straw tek?

Straw can be pretty susceptible to contams, yes. I'd suggest poo over straw any day for that reason. It all depends on what materials/tools you have available though.

It's not necessary to be misting your cakes still, especially now that you have fruits.

What are your temps?

If I wasn't familiar this this site, that sounds like the most absurd statement ever!

My temps are in the low 70s as opposed to the mid 80s during incubation

I've never heard of that Tek.
It sounds to me sort of like the CD Tek someone else proposed before, about making a casing out of one of those 50 CD-R Drums, and using the hole in the center for water or nutes

they are pinning like crazy now and the small 1/4" ones are now all about 1" tall. yea the drinking strw tek is what i was referring to. didn't bother with it, instead im just continuing misting the walls and tops and just a tiny bit on two of the cakes, for comparative reasons. why is it bad though? does it cause molding?

Dunking has replaced the drinking straw tek, that's why it's not common anymore.

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.
